Last Pictures of 2009//Painted Calipers//323i
I froze my ass off yesterday and washed my car/took pictures for the last time this year. I met up with my friend since elementary school, Brian, at a local park and took some pictures. He has a 5-speed 2000 BMW 323i. He's got new 18" black face/chrome lip wheels coming sometime next month.
Using the DIY in the 3G Garage and shooting a few messages back and forth to LoveMyTL-S who posted the DIY, I decided to paint my calipers and rotor hubs. The calipers and hubs were coated with rust and looked like shit behind my A-Specs. I purchased the Duplicolor Caliper Kit off of amazon.com for about $24 with shipping. It wasn't a rattle can you can get at Autozone, but instead a whole package which included brake cleaner, paint in a can, a brush, and a stirring stick. I didn't want red or some other "look at me" color because I don't have BBK, therefore they are nothing great to look at. Therefore I stuck with gloss black. The process took me most of the day because I was working by myself, but it was worth it.
Incase anybody was wondering, for these pictures I was using a dookie ass Kodak P&S. Nothing special. I did some basic editing in iPhoto and that's it!
As you can tell, the top/edges of my rotors are pretty rusty. I was in my garage for 6 hours freezing my ass off doing just the calipers, therefore I said the hell with it for now. I'll be taking care of that this summer.
My TL will look the same for a while unfortunantly. I've considered painting my center bar of my grill flat black and my emblem a glossy black so it matches the one on the rear of the car. I may knock that out since I'm out of school for Christmas break. My 21st birthday is in March and I'm considering buying myself a black vinyl roof and adding that to the car. Besides that small stuff, I'm still at 4x4 status for the time being
ALL comments welcome

The camera really is that bad Eric! But thank you
I'm seeing how much money Santa gives me and maybe I'll be able to pick up a D40 or something like that
Thanks man! They aren't as clean as yours, but they turned out pretty well. The only problem was that w
Haha thanks man! I found mine on Craigslist. Have you tried looking there?
I believe I was talking to you about the front lettering on a thread you made. The place where I got mine no longer carries the front letter inserts unfortunately. Good luck getting them on your car!
Thanks! I love the color of your car. If I hadn't have gotten WDP, AM would have been my next choice
Thank you! I'll be sure to tell him that. He's got new wheels coming in within the next month or so. Him and I painted his calipers black yesterday the same way I did mine so they look better behind the wheels
Thanks man! I really can't wait for the black roof
I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to your 1st gen
Thanks! It was a long process but worth it for sure.
Thank you! I would love to drop it and get the A-Spec kit, but money is tight as of right now. Just another reason why I'm doing the little stuff here and there
Thanks Aaron! It sucks you missed out on the Charlotte meet
How about I trade you my A-Specs for your coilovers and black roof and call it a deal
And I can't stay away from Forza man. I've bought probably 10 cars within the last week or so.
You should man! Especially considering you have those sexy ass HRE's
It's worth the time without a doubt. Your Works look sick on Jason's TL and I'm looking forward to seeing your car finished with those new wheels

^Thanks Alex! Of course I washed it on Thursday and it decides to rain and snow all day today
Ideally I would love a set of coilovers, but they are out of my budget as of right now. Al, the guy with the 05 NBP TL with Accurate's old TL-S parts who showed up to the parking garage late, has a set of H&R Sport Springs that he will sell me for a sweet deal! I really want to get them from him, but with 72k miles, I'm worried about my stock shocks blowing with the springs on them.

^ I have about 70K on my TL and the stock shocks are just fine. I had the TEIN springs on for about 15K. I try to avoid all potholes/shitty roads and don't abuse my car so I bet they will last another 70K
I think you should be okay with sport springs. If you are buying races ones, then I'd be worried about the stock shocks.
And if they do blow (I don't think they will) hell, another reason to buy coilovers

^That's really good to hear. I may go ahead and get the sport springs from Al then. They won't slam it but it will be better than what I have right now.

Tyler, your TL looks great. But hey, is it me or does the drivers side headlight lens on the BMW look fogged up????

The previous owner of the BMW had the passenger side headlight replaced and not the drivers side, so the left one is a little more "weather beaten" than the right one. Within the next few months he's getting new headlights with HID's and angel eyes so they nasty ones will no longer be there

Look at what I did today:
Flat black with a glossy black emblem. I wanted to do the emblem glossy so it matches the rear emblem which I painted black, but looking at it on the car, I think I'm going to paint it white eventually, probably over spring break. It doesn't look bad at all, but I think white would give it a little more contrast
Opinions?

Now you're talking buddy! That looks sweet. I really like the flat black/glossy emblem. It has that stealth look to it. It reminds me of when Mizzou played the Jayhawks in football at Arrowhead Stadium this season. Mizzou came out with flat black helmets with glossy black logos on the side of the helmet...VERY sexy, and stealthy looking too.

I do like that I haven't seen anybody else do that yet (at least I don't think so)
I agree the LFA is a bit overpriced but it's a downright gorgeous car. I wouldn't buy one over a Ferrari or a Lamborghini (especially the LP550-4) but I would drive one

Here are some quick pics from today:
Sorry for the fingermarks all over the grill. I haven't washed the car since I put it all back together.

The grill yesterday didn't take quite as long. It feels like taking the car apart and putting it back together always takes longer than the actual project at hand

I agree. I thought about it but I decided to leave it as is for now. I would like to color match it eventually, but that's not high on the "to-do list". I think I need to get rid of my 4x4 stance first.

Ehhh. I'm trying to get on your level man. I think you inspired me to do something to my grill besides the badge I've got going on.
Yea man I agree. Luckily for you, yours has the Brembos up front so you didn't have to paint another set of calipers. It was an all day project but well worth it. It was amazing how much rust and nasty shit came off of the calipers
I know I know, I'm not ballin' like you

Damn, looks awesome! I agree with Jason, but leave like it is for now, it will give you something to do later down the road.

What suspension setup are thinking about? are you getting before the black roof?

I love the little badge you have but you should do something with your grill. Maybe make the middle cross bar gloss black to match the black roof?
Well my broke ass can't afford much, but I know a few people that are selling the H&R Sport Springs for really cheap. I want to get them just so I have a drop until I get coilovers. I mentioned in posts earlier that I'm worried about my stock shocks blowing with the springs on, but I guess it's unlikely for that to happen with only 72k miles. The black roof will be done hopefully by the end of March. My 21st birthday is the beginning of March and I'll probably take some of the extra cash and get it done.
I had to do all four while changing the rotors. It was a four day project.

Before I painted, I used Adhesion Promotor to make sure it the paint stuck and didn't bubble or anything like that. I used Rustoleum Auto Flat Black Paint for everything except the emblem. For the emblem I used Rustoleum Auto Gloss Black Paint.
I'm sure you don't have to stick to that exact brand, but it wouldn't hurt. I got the stuff with the high heat resistance since it's near the engine. I would rather be safe than sorry.
I'm a perfectionist when it comes to working on my car, I don't want to screw anything up or make it look trashy, so it took me most of the day. I would wait up to 45 minutes between coats of adhesion promotor and paint to ensure it was dry. I did 3 coats of adhesion promotor and 4 coats of paint on everything, so drying time was crazy, but I didn't want to rush anything.
Honestly the most time consuming thing about this project is taking the damn bumper off
Good luck with getting yours done! Be sure to post pictures when you get it done
