When is an exhaust too loud?
When is an exhaust too loud?
So from my signature you can see i have a mid muffler delete with a straight pipe and a dynomax resonator. What i didnt mention on there(yet) is that i just got my two rear muffler taken out and had a straight pipes with tips put on. Looks wise its amazing

I just got it done yesterday and have already had alot of compliments on it. I have also had alot of compliments on the actual exhaust note to, it is loud and agressive but doesnt sound like a ricer, its a deep tone because of the dynomax and i love the sound of it.
The problems arise when im driving by myself or with somebody else. From around 1800 RPM to 2400RPM the cabin drone in my car is just ridiculous, i cant talk to somebody right next me and my ear drums start ringing. I understand that its only my 2nd day with this set up and i still have to get used to it but i just wanted to get your input on it.
When is the noise just to much just right or not enough for you.
Thanks Guys!

I guess too loud depends on personal opinion.
IMO it also depends on the type of car too. The TL is a luxury car (okay maybe "near luxury"). I feels that luxury cars should be reasonably comfy and quiet, so I don't think a loud exhaust (especially one with the level of drone you're describing) really befits a luxury car. On the other hand, on something like a V8 muscle car, a loud exhaust and drone are almost expected. That's just my opinion though and others are sure to disagree.

Yeah man you removed too much even for this car. If you don't want to put the mufflers back on, you can always add another larger resonator in addition to the one you already have on the car. This should quiet it down some and eliminate some drone. Which Dynomax resonator do you have on there now?

You have the 24215 resonator then. It's definitely too small of a resonator to have in there alone with the mufflers being deleted. Either put the stock one back if you still have it or get the 24235 resonator.
What if i kept the 24215 muffler in but then placed my stock resonator back in before that one. I really like the tone that my current resonator gives off.
You can do that, but the stock resonator is 5" around and has an 18" resonating chamber I believe. The tone that the 24215 gives off will be greatly decreased. Looks like you may have some trial and error here.
Ugh, this sucks. i spent 160 on getting the straight pipe with tips and i dont want to do a trial and error cycle with the resonator. Ill probably go tomorrow and talk to the guy and see what he can do for me. Because it is to loud for me even though it does sound godly.
I think with the mid-muffler gone, rear mufflers deleted, and just the stock resonator installed it will sound great. You can always sell the Dynomax resonator on the Black Market here. I sold mine there. I think if you do that, your exhaust should sound similar to this and the drone will be eliminated.
With all straight piping, if you install a resonator shorter than 18"
Won't love it for sure
If you want to keep that tone Dyno. gives
replace it with 18" then
Totally trial and error
Been there before
LOL i had this problem too. Deleted the mid muffler, and had a straight pipe welded in instead, along with the magnaflow mufflers the previous owner had put on. Too loud. Accelerating on the on ramp to a freeway was deafening, much like you describe. After getting back home I sat and pondered a bit, and drove back and had the mid muffler put back in. I guess the modified axleback (Magnaflow) really makes a difference. There is a point where it's just ridiculous, but its up to you and your preferences on what's too loud. For me it was like having a subwoofer blowing a low note the entire time and it almost felt like the entire cabin was vibrating.
oh yeah i am content with the mid muffler back in. I get a pretty decent note with the modified axleback..i could make a recording of it if someone's looking into an alternative to a mid muffler delete. but WAY less drone. Good enough for my friend riding in the back to comment on how nice it sounded. I had a feeling i made a bad decision when i felt the heft of the mid muffler (i'd say 15-20 lbs, good i guess if you're on a TL diet). I have a video with how it sounds in the interior:
i dont know how that compares to stock.

Loud is subjective, I like loud. I daily drove this for years so I'm gonna think any TL is quiet.
And like to run open headers sometimes too.
So yeah I think a TL with no rear mufflers isn't too loud at all.

Ok so i filmed a video of the cabin noise with my galaxy SIII and after listening to it the video doesn't portray how loud it really is, simply because the tone given off by the exhaust is just too low. While driving though i did play my XM radio at 10 volume so you guys would have a comparison so hopefully that helps.
Its not so loud to the point where you can talk to the person next to you but it is extremely obvious. I dont mind being able to hear my exhaust but when there is a pause in the conversation to acknowledge the sound it seems a bit much. Even though its my 3rd day with this exhaust i already seem to be getting use to it.

Sounds good to me, makes me want to delete my mid muffler now, I have the Dynomax res, and rear mufflers deleted, I figured I would keep the smaller muffler to keep it somewhat under control, from all the ones I've heard as long as it has a res it still seems to sound good. Part of me wants to try a different muffler, I miss the Spintech Pro Street I had on my TBSS.

exhaust sound is always very subjective. To some, loud = good, other prefer a tone that better match the car that it's coming from. IMO, a loud near-straight pipe set-up is better suited for a domestic v8, bc the sound characteristic doesn't match the image of a luxury imports very well. More resonator or maybe adding back the mid muffler, would give it more of a 'tuned' and refined note that better match the image of the car.

was there still a good tone there that you could hear or did it silence it almost completely? Thinking of putting mine back in to see; my cars a little loud but not bad at all... Just that my favorite sound is stage 1... Just wanna know if imna still gonna have some kind of good sound there IM sure my mods are different just trying to get a general idea?...
thanks...other than stage 1; my second best setup sound wise (kinda loud but perfect) would be
pdc's~rv6v2 jpipe/3Rd cat del~18in magnaflow res~ stock res~mm del~oem mufflers
ultimatum127 I know you have your muffs del due to tips kinda but I think if you get pdc's 18in res and put your oem muffs back on it will loud & good along with power gain... Just my

thanks...I like that I can also hear the engine at the higher RPM.

I worked on my exhaust piecemeal simply due to budget. Jpipe first (which also deleted mid cat), mid muffler delete, HFPC's, then rear muffler delete. It was at the rear muffler delete that I realized I went too far so I reversed that. I only unbolted and removed the drivers side one and it sounded like ass. But with those other three modifications it's right where I want it.
