Is the TL Type S auto that much slower then the 6 speed?
I just got an 08 tl type s and Ive read that the 6 speed is much quicker then the 5speed auto.. is this true? Kinda disappointing if it is true I mean how much slower are we talking?

I dont know what the all time best bone stock auto Type S has run, but there was a post a while back where a guy ran a 13.7 at like 103mph in a stock (maybe with CAI) 07 Type S 6mt with like 105,000 miles. I was pretty impressed!
So it would be cool if we knew what the best time someone has run in a stock auto Type S to compare.

04-06 base TL's come with a six speed manual transmissions.
you can tell by the Brembo brakes that are equipped on the front just like your type-s.
the six speed manual transmission equipped cars are LIGHTER by a couple hundred pounds and the transmission has a better gear ratio than the type-s Auto which equates to being a quicker car all around.
so, while the auto type-s hits that 4th gear wall, the six speed manuals will blow past it and keep going to 150mph.
the type-s auto is limited to 120 or 130mph

I thought the same thing when I first got my Type-S (auto) but in the two years of owning it I've never been in situation where someone has pulled up to me and wanted to race. Were not in Evo's or STI's

People pull up to race me all the time? Turbo supra the other day was the most recent. .I raced a few ferraris and even a dodge viper I don't know why they give me the time of day maybe to see what their car can do against an average car?...but I am always modded from like day one. ..

From a dig, I truly believe the auto type S is equal to the 6mt base. That is because from a dig you start out at the lowest gear and work through all of them. Don't bother racing past 109 though because that's the 4th gear wall. From most roll speeds though 6mt base will have the advantage due to ratio.
Yes, the base 6mt does put down about the same hp as auto type s, but I don't think it puts down the same torque. There's no replacement for displacement. The little advantage in torque for the auto type S about makes up for the slightly heavier weight. However the 6mt still has the gearing advantage.

p.s. is that your zipcode in your username? If so I drive through Waukesha all the time and never see other type-s. Don't try to race me if you see me, though.

6mt will pull on an auto type-s all day long, from a roll or a dig. The stall converter on the auto will always lag behind a well-driven 6mt off the line, and the gearing on the 5at kills it at higher speeds - the dreaded 4th gear as others have mentioned.
p.s. is that your zipcode in your username? If so I drive through Waukesha all the time and never see other type-s. Don't try to race me if you see me, though.

I rarely see anyone in the Waukesha area with a Type S. I work in the area and own a 2008 KBP Type S. I've seen some of your posts about the work you have done on it through King Motorsports. I was considering going through them, all i hear is great things about the work they do!

edit: did some more research, autos tend to be faster in a drag race due to more consistent and quick shifting. nevermind!

As far as bracket racing goes, people like automatics because of the consistency.
But someone who can drive a stick well will always have an advantage on Honda/Acura automatics, especially when it comes to down shifting. Newer automatics are a lot better but our cars can be infuriatingly slow to down shift. Maybe the TL is better than the Accord since y'all have paddle shifters but hitting the gas and letting it shift down automatically there doesn't seem to be any real consistency in how quickly or how many gears it will shift down.

Everything else being equal and the automatic having a torque converter matched for the power band.

I believe a good stick driver will have the ability to outlaunch an automatic...however consistency is the key, and I have seen many supposedly good stick drivers lose to a slower car. Lets say 2 cars decide to do a 10 runs, one is auto and one is stick. How many times will the stick driver nail the launch to beat the automatic?

I'm betting my 6mt + summer tires could out launch an auto TL-S with all seasons on.
and as soon as I hit third, I'm gone...
lol we dont even have to wait for the dreaded 4th gear wall, I'll be gone before that.
