TL Diet 2.0/Track Car Build - Roll Cage Pg 51

Anyone else agree that the Autometer cobalt gauges are almost a perfect match for the stock 04-06 TL gauges? Not really worried about what they look like after dark being I'll never be driving it after dark anyways. But daytime looks pretty damn close to me!

Dude..... you are GOOD with that fiberglass work !!!
Where are the pics of the sunroof plug? Making the sunroof plug was probably a "walk in the park" for you compared to that awesome gauge cluster.
Do you have professional experience laying fiberglass?

The sunroof plug was easy with the glass as a mold! I'm heading outta town here today and will snap some pix when I get back.
I guess this thread has kinda morphed into my track car build but oh well!

Looking good, props on making the gauge pod yourself
But... wherez the gauges?

Just hunting around for the best deals but they'll be in soon enough. Pretty sure I'm doing a Water temp, Oil Pressure, and maybe an EGT or something else.
Although because of my different belt routing due to the AC delete, A voltmeter might be a safe one to make sure there is no belt slip or underdriving of the alternator.
Who knows what I'll decide but they will get filled!

To me no. I think at stock weight, sure, the HP and trq would help pull the heavyweight around. But traction in the corners would be lots harder to control and optimize at my weight without running a much better tire. Which would only last about two track days and that isn't what I'm after right now.

"if you selling the nav PM me" i may be wanting to get that off your garage floor

So I think I've finally decided that the nav is coming out. Doing the gauges / car info on the screen is doable but comes at a hefty price and about 20 lbs in total weight. So the plan is to pull the nav out, sell it and buy some goodies for this track season. From there I'll continue my fiberglass work and make a panel to "fill" that hole and use that for more space to mount things in the future.
I presume most of you would agree with that plan?

BTW - what tire and wheels are you running? I'm too lazy to search.

Where did you get those pics of the Thunderhill TL?
I have some pic of it that I downloaded from the Acura Press website, but I have never ever seen pics showing the interior.

While this is true, I am looking for a tire that will last me most if not all of the season. With a treadwear of 100, the NT01's would maybe last two events and then I'm out about another grand to get new ones. I have found that a tire with tread wear between 180 and 220 will give excellent grip, be a little better in the cold/wet, and will last for the entire season no problem.
So unless someone's buying me tires I'll stick to the NT05's, Dunlop Stars, Pilots, or Kuhmo XS's, etc.

Got in two of the Autometer Cobalt Gauges today. Water temp and volt meter should be in by the end of the weekend so stay tuned for pics.
Now for the third it's between the EGT and Autometer's D-Pic gauge. Anybody know anything about that D-Pic gauge? I would pretty just be buying it for the lateral G meter feature it has.
Also working on the mold to make a panel to fill in the void from the navigation so that should be done too in the coming weeks.

Made some progress today with the gauges today. Volt meter is finished up and once I buy a new radiator hose tomorrow the water temp gauge will be buttoned up as well.
Still gotta pick the last gauge and get it installed then we'll be all done with this project.

wideband or oil pressure
and personally i would get rid of that voltmeter and: A. either mount it somewhere else, cause i see it as being a less important gauge, and good visibility is not extremely important (so maybe at the bottom of the navi replacement panel when you do that OR B.completely get rid of it
edit: idk what speeds you actually race at (assuming on the slightly slower side), but now that you are going to have a more accurate water temp gauge, maybe experiment with blocking the grills and such for better aerodynamics (like how nascar does with the tape over the grills to reduce drag at the higher speeds)

I guess I don't really see the point of one for my setup. Just bolt ons, no tune, no FI.
Wouldn't mind having an oil temp/pressure gauge but man it would be a pain to install on the TL.
I guess I'm leaning towards the D-Pic being I think seeing my lateral G stats would be pretty nice. As stated before, the volt meter stays. With the different belt routing I wanna asap if the belt is rubbing or slipping and I'll know that instantly because the volt meter should reflect lower alternator output.
My track speeds at faster than you think and I'm already working on converting the lower bumper openings into a brake duct system. Other than that I'm looking for as much cooling as I can get right now.

oil temp (or pressure which i would actually probably prefer over the temp [think sloshing oil in the pan during turns]) hard to install on the TL not really; just get a t-fitting and screw it in where the oil pressure light switch goes (a little above the oil filter actually); or even get an oil filter adapter plate (height might be an issue though, if the filter is not going to be remote mounted, with the filter hitting the crossmember)
as far as the wiring of the gauge itself, it's is going to be the exact same as the water temp (sensor might have a different range though and a different gauge obviously but the wiring is going to be the same though)
and wideband... as far as staying stock YES not much help, but if you want to do ANYTHING in the future that is more then just the bolt-ons, it is going to help you tune and such
and the dpic; i can see an advantage to it but i also see it as partially being a gimmick though

No current plans for big engine mods in the future. Keep it simple, keep it reliable, and save money for better things.
Yes and the oil filter plate would be a no go for sure and the t-fitting would work but I've actually seen a few of those break and cover a track in oil in the past so I'm just gonna steer clear of those for the time being. I'm sure it would probably be just fine but it's just not in the plans right now. It'll give me something to do next winter! lol

Have you gotten yours yet?
The lightweight TL might not be that hard on an "R" compound tires. I haven't gotten around to posting the results but I did a comparison of the NT05 against a few of the popular "R" compounds on the street and the makeshift "track" nearby. Results were surprising.

right now tho, I'm more concerned about the petroleum product in my MC.

You have no idea how rewarding it is to see the look on people's faces with this "4 door, FWD, V6 Luxury sedan is hunting them down on a track. Is there anything wrong with the usual M3's, Evo/STI'S, vette's, etc? No! But God its boring doing the same thing everyone else has already mastered. So why the hell not do this? At least that's my firm belief on this.
lol good work and keep it up!
