Thermal Wrap on TL's exhaust

Folks...I have posted dyno results on my 6MT Type S
As you can see part of the forum is focusing on heatsoaking for our cars.

During the installation of the J-Pipe me and my technician noticed that the J-Pipe is extremely close to the Oil-Pan. This pipe creates excessive heat to the oil sitting on that pan.

The outcome of my dyno results is that we believe heat is a killer to our car. (just to many cars as well).

This is not a post to tell how to gain whp; but absolutely to help all of us in how we can maintain our power at all times...I truly believe that the heatshield gaskets provided by Excelerate to the TB and the manifold can make a big difference.

Also i want to say from my experience with what happened and the design of the TL..it is a must to put a thermo wrap on that J-pipe to prevent that oil on the oil pan staying hot. Dyno's are coming soon not for the purpose of gaining power but to see how we can keep it.

It is a cheap and easy way of keeping whp to our cars. What is your opinion?

^ check my post in your other thread

weather corrosion can be a serious, serious problem when wrapping exhaust products.. it will save hp, and keep the car cooler... but at what cost?

I hear ya...I dont think or worry 2 much about corrosion specially with the manufactured metal produced for the pipes. If its wet? well i don't know its a wrap you know? Wear and tear i guess...Its a matter of taking time to remove the pipe once in a while and either put a new one or clean it

You could make a metal plate with some heat shield on it- mounted so it directs heat away from the pan. Then no issue of corrossion-contact of material on pipe itself.

The intake manifold spacers are as important at the TB spacer- isolating the rising engine heat from the intake manifold reduces the temp rise and keeps HP up as ambient and engien temps rise.
Especially noticed over 100 degrees ambient and go for a fun run in the mountains

There is a spray-on product for the heat wrap tapes to protect it from oil-water- damage etc. Check auto parts stores or jcwhitney has it mailorder
Use stainless hose clamps or stainless safety wire to secure the wrap at several points-depending on application.

I have to agree...Both heatshileds and gaskets its a must for those willing to take care of there cars regarding performance. Its about being meticulous everything helps right?
Anyone here with a car close to 40K including sales tax and moding it up will take the time to babysit they're machine...At least that is how I am

Here is a nice thread on thermal wrap for the intake. Page 2, innacurate's DIY.

Not exhaust, but related to heat reduction.

if you get the correct kit yes.. the kit I have has the spray which is a silicone spray that really prevents damage from water and more specifically humidity

Oil Cooler?

As far as the J pipe goes, wouldn't getting an oil cooler to cool the engine bound oil be somewhat helpful?

I don't think it'll make a lick of difference, as I noted in the other posts linked in.

1) I don't think it'll fit, the tolerances are too tight by the oil pan. I figure that's why Al and others are selling thier wrap kits.

2) Noted corrosion impacts. Stainless corrodes too. Spray will only prevent corrosion for one season... unless you plan to remove, spray, and rewrap every year.

3) It won't help. Thermal wrap is for racing applications where the engine is at WOT for long periods of time. When was the last time your car was at WOT longer than about 5 seconds...?

Sure, heat is the killer of most cars. The J-pipe moving 3mm closer to the pan isn't enough to hurt anything with it's 2 noted oil coolers.

Well the wrap kit I purchased was going to be used with the precat deletes, but richie changed my mind and I didn't

If he wraps the stockjpipe it wouldn't yield much. But if he wrapped aftermarket one it will because the heat will stay up and travel faster
