StopTech Brakes
StopTech Brakes
I bought the BrakeMotive kit last year. And I can tell you first hand there is a reason why they are the price at what they are. Anyways I am college student and the spring semester is whining down. And I am just trying to get idea for a new brakes for my 05 Acura TL. I like the look of the Drill and/or Slotted rotters but isn't necessary. I am looking at the StopTech kit threw XLR8, but haven't had much luck on finding a lot of reviews. From what I can tell some people rave about the AutoZone C-Max and others like BrakeMotive. I understand AutoZone gives lifetime warranty, but I am not to worried about warranty if the brake pads will last a couple years... Just a little back ground I don't race or think the TL is a race car. Just my DD. So I just want some people opinions on the StopTech compared to any other brand.
Check out this link. Don't know if you have an Auto TL or not, but check my post #15.

Centric makes Stoptech.
This is the only small issue I have with the brake pads causing a slight imprint in the rotor after washing. Vibration I have had goes away mostly after another break in procedure or repeated stops.

Racingbrake rotors, PERIOD.
I have 190K on the TL right now and I've had the same rotors on since at least 100K miles. I put them on around 50K or 60K miles if I remember correctly. I've used only factory pads (mix or aspec and regular) and the stopping power is pretty incredible to me. I've done numerous stops from 120 to 40 with them on local strips and they have done amazingly well with very little fade and a ton of bite. Pads make a huge difference! If you put a hard pad on a soft rotor it'll eat through it and vice versa. I've found Acura OEM pads & The A-Spec pads to be very gentle on the Racing Brake rotors. I did have the rear rotors refinished (took off very little and well within service limit) at 170K with the 3rd set of rear pads on these rear rotors. However I've been through only 1 set of front pads! I'll get to this later!
2 piece rotors are more expensive and the only benefit is cheaper replacements for the wearable part over time and the reduction of spinning weight. The latter helps improve performance slightly and I highly doubt you'll notice it in everyday driving. Maybe in 1-5% of the sporty driving you will ever do, probably like 50% of the driving you'd do in a rental car

Slotted front rotors are a good decision in my opinion. Slotting help improves the bite and helps keep the pad and rotor clean. On the rears you'll be eating through pads every 20-100K depending on how you drive. I wouldn't recommend it and I'd go with racing brake solid or drilled blanks to match the fronts (no slots on rear).
Drilling is more for aesthetics, weight reduction and and as well to help vent the disk a bit better. Cheaper rotors have the holes drilled in and not cast into the blank! This creates weak spots; the holes need to be cast and then finished via a drill and then balanced! This ensures rotor strength and ensures you won't get vibrations! If you want to add the drilled holes option then you will have really no noticeable difference in braking in everyday driving in my opinion. You'll notice their benefit in maybe 1-5% of your driving and they won't chew through your pads like slots. However you'll be prone to more brake fade as the holes reduce mass, allowing the rotor to heat up faster. This only matters under severe conditions such as racing but sometimes all of us can push the limits of what things were designed for.
I'd talk to Mr. Heeltoe or Excelerate on here and look into their brake packages as well. I put the heeltoe ones on my TL.

Don't ever buy drilled rotors.. Even very expensive brake rotors Crack, porsche comes to mind. If you want something aesthetic go Slotted, but they don't provide any performance boost over a good set of blanks.

I put Powerstop drilled/slotted rotors with ceramic pads on all 4 wheels for $285 from Autoanything (free shipping) and they are excellent. The rotors are still bright silver in appearance. Highly recommended.
