The TL is my daily driver. I'm shooting for the 400-450whp mark. I believe I remember reading in a previous turbo thread that the stock torque converter had problems with getting any power beyond 450 to the wheels.
I did research an aftermarket torque converter through level 10, but if I'm going to upgrade the torque converter for more hp, I think I have to upgrade the transmission and engine internals.
That'll have to be a project for another time (or when my engine blows up...) but it would be fun to go for some big turbo numbers at some point.

That's what it was, I didn't remember if he had upgraded his torque converter. I thought I remembered seeing another member here with a Type S that had the same issues after around 450 whp. Level 10 offers an upgraded transmission as well. I wonder if that would help with getting over 450 whp to the wheels.

KN_TL correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Libert69 was a 04 auto trans then swapped to a 6MT. I would think with the revisions of the auto trans in 07-08 models (OP is a Type-S) would be more robust relative to the 04-06 auto trans.

Lets all join hands and say a prayer for our automatic transmissions LOL , Ive been putting over 450 whp to my automatic for over a year and all it has is a big ass cooler been holding up so far, the type-s transmission is like the odyssey transmission and they are pretty tough Iv'e only seen a few go bad at very high mileage with no service history and black fluid, so I'm confident that these will hold some power

good to hear about the transmissions being reliable, I've switched to redline sythetic ATF fluid. Do you think I need a bigger transmission cooler or is the stock one sufficient?

The throttle body doesn't close all the way during co-op. You will normally see between a 50-70% change in TPS graphing during a shift and this goes for the 'throttle blip' feature as well. The variation in percentage all depends on the model and it's programmed gain between the APP and throttle body which is determined by mapping in the ECM. The idea here is to not close the throttle body (as this would create momentary engine braking) but to close the throttle just enough where the motor is between the two points of engine braking and producing torque....a happy place for gear shifts.
I've been running the updated transmission case (2007 and up) now for maybe 2 years now. Mind you, the car is NOT babied and its regularly sees 12-15lbs of boost daily when driven. Honda says the transmission is more compact and much stronger than previous design. It's definitely hard to argue here against that point. My only complaint about the damn thing is trying to hook up during WOT when the wastegates are set to 15lbs of boost. I'm running 10.5" wide street tires and felt I've hit the limits of the car as its sits currently. So, I'm going to stay at a safely tuned 12lbs and enjoy her.

Just dropped the TL off! Now the waiting begins. The guys over at the shop were excited to get started on the project and I was promised lots of pictures and updates. They're also running a baseline dyno today. I'll post that info when I get it.

Yeah, I was hoping it would be closer to 236, especially since I have pcd's. The TL has 98k miles though and I think engines lose some hp as they age. You're right about being well beyond 223whp and I can't wait!

I made 230 whp with about 120K miles on the clock and now at 133k with the numbers in my signature. These engines age well, maybe it has something to do with the dyno since you only got the HP # on the dynojet?

Unless they did a 'baseline' with the timing maps updated and the knock control tables zeroed out, I'd say go easy +/- 10 - 15 whp depending on how the car acts. I doubt they did that since it was just a pre-mod dyno, so I'd be happy with those numbers for an auto.
I saw you were planning on running 10-12psi of boost, and shooting for 400 - 450 whp. What size is the turbo? I know it's the STS 'china' turbo, but I'd be more concerned about the size than where it is made. If the shop installs it correctly, I think it will last. Looking at the pics though (granted totally subjective since pics don't show much) it 'appears' to be a bit small. I'm sure STS knows how to size turbos better than I do though, especially considering how they have a longer exhaust gas path which cools it somewhat, it's probably intentional.

The turbo is an STS branded GT-35 750hp turbo with a .58 A/R turbine housing. I don't know anything about how to properly size a turbo so I'm relying on the experience of STS to properly size the turbo. The shop I'm having it installed at did not seem concerned that the turbo was too small to reach my goal of around 400 - 450 whp. I hope the combined turboing experience of STS and Speedfactory is enough to know if the turbo is big enough
I went with some bosch motorsport 970cc injectors. They are the same ones that UTAH Type S is using in his turbo build.

To get a torque reading, they have to be able to pull the tach signal. Sounds like they may be used to doing old school stuff, or maybe just LSx stuff that has plug wires. They should be able to grab an rpm signal off of one of the coil wires.
Its fun watching the local domestic shop here try and dyno Rotarys lol.

^I was assuming the need for the smaller A/R was because of the distance and cooler air charge. It'll be interesting to see how early the turbo spools up with the small A/R and hopefully it won't hit a wall before redline.
I'm assuming they'll be able to figure it out, they do a lot of honda and acura tuning so I would be surprised if they couldn't get it working. I'm hoping they'll get it working today and get a baseline for torque and then get the turbo installed ASAP

Maddogtheta so happy that you are having speedfactory set this up for you! They seem like a well-established shop with some very good racing experience.

I think your right about the turbine A/R being smaller since this is a remote mount turbo,this will also help with the transient response of the turbo.Very interested to see how this set-up reacts and drives, especially with keeping temps down under the hood which is already an issue for the TL.

It was stock except for the PCD's I have on there.
I got an update yesterday, the turbo is on. Ricky at speedfactory recommended going with a water to air intercooler to keep from having to hack up the front, he was also concerned about the amount of air flow as well. The core for that is supposed to get delivered today.
I'm waiting on some pics from him, but I think I might just go by the shop today and see the progress.

^ That's one plus to paying for the installation, it's their job to get it installed quickly. I'm hoping that it'll be done this week. But I'm betting it will be next week.
