PTP turbo blanket + new air filter for the turbo

PTP turbo blanket + new air filter for the turbo
Like many of the turbo guys I am playing with new air filter setups that allow the most air with least restriction, with the space available. I started off with a small K&N filter bolted right to the turbo ( rc-2520 I think ) and it worked pretty well, but was too small and seemed like it had to cause a restriction.
I saw another memeber running a silicon elbow with a 9 inch cone filter and decided that was the direction I wanted to go, but after buying all the pieces ( 4" elbow, 4" adapter to allow two 4" tubes to attach and the 9" air filter ) and countless hrs of trying to make it work I gave up.
I sent the 9" ( AEM dry flow ) filter back got it's 6" little brother, and got it to fit. I have been running like this for about 8k and watching the IAT to see how it differed from my last setup. The filter is lodged way down by the tranny and doesnt have much room around it due to the tight fit, my thinking was to get the filter away from the turbo and cooler IAT's would ensue. It seems like the limited space and heat from the tranny/engine negating any benefit I was gaining by moving the filter away from the turbo. Additionaly the added restriction of the longer intake was hurting spool.
So, I did some research and found a filter I felt could fit ( RC-5148 ). I got the filter and tried it on one night to find it was too big and was in the way of stuff I couldn't move. Pissed I put it back in the box and let it sit for a few days while I pondered what a fool I am. A few days later I decided to take another crack at it and cut down the flange to see if that would give me the space I needed. After lots of cutting, it fit and was perfect, big enough to supply the air flow I need and small enough to be bolted to the turbo.
The turbo blanket was aimed at both heat reduction and speeding up spool. Again I looked around for a few months and found PTP to be a brand most were happy with. With $50 for the air filter and $110 for the blanket it was well worth it. IAT's rise more slowly and spool does seem to be quicker, I am having a hard time compairing due to the 25 degree mornings and how much of a monster it is at low temps.
The new air filter also seems to be helping, much less effort is needed to get into boost and the car feels less restricted. Here are some pics of the new mods.

Looks good! I've been considering a blanket myself. Where did you get yours? $125 is a lot less than the ones I have been looking at.
Edit: I see, direct from PTP. What is the difference between the T3 and the T3/T4? Which did you get? Thanks!

I got it from ebay. PTP turbo blankets. You can also buy direct for the same $99 for the blanket and $10 for shipping. The turbo was melting seam sealant from the inside of the hood and IAT's would spike in stop and go traffic, so I decided this was something I needed. I am still a little worried about the effects the blanket will have on the turbo from the increased heat, but the intake side of the turbo is cooler and so is the rest of the engine. I am running a oil cooler and haven't noticed the lines being hotter, they could be cooler, although it has been pretty cool in Cali ( 30-40 is cold to us ).
The look of blanket is good, it is 130 degrees instead of 500+ when hot and hugs the turbo perfectly. I have not had any smells or burn off from it and the construction looks good. The fit in the engine compartment is also very nice.

It is a lot of fun but modified to this extent causes one to worry about the car all the time if it's not at home in the garage. The other issue is that none of the performance parts can be insured because the ins company would not be happy if they knew what they are insuring. It also exposes a weak spot when people see how nice the car is and how much you care about it, they know how to hurt you. I had security re aim two cameras to watch my car from all sides as well as had the feed connected to my desktop. Other than the paranoia I love the car and the turbo setup. I often look around and think if I had more $$$ what I would get car wise and TL really is what I would drive. My custom supercar.

Agree dont want to go into a debate about super or turbo. However, turbo gives you the power you want but more to worry about especially if its a DD and the super is more realiable but too much for so little power

However, it really just depends on how one treats their ride. Anyways I envy you guys.......for now XD

I would sell off all your n/a stuff first. I waited to sell everything and it was outdated ( v1-v2) by the time I sold it. Rodney includes almost everything with the kit so all you need is meth injection and a few other items like gauges. I would gather all the stuff you can prior to getting the kit, so you can install with everything. I love the turbo., my advice to you is watch the speedo with the turbo, the difference in TQ is crazy. New tires are a must as well, I was getting spin in 3-4 gear at freeway speeds with my old tires. I have learned how to handle the extra power, but stabing the gas under boost will still overpower the tires in all but 5-6th gear.

i have a supercharger right now that I'm trying to sell, but other than that i have everything like the meth kit a/f gauge boost gauge, blow off valve and waste gate, so pretty much all i would need is the kit and turbo, also i just got the ms3 last week, so just waiting for somebody to take the blower off my hand so me and the car can pay rodney a visit an expen$ive visit,
did you have install by rodney?

If you are at all mechanically inclined it is definitely a DIY kit. If this is your DD then you'd be under the gun to get it all done quickly but there was very little needed with regard to major mods. Cutting the tabs off of the subframe was the extent of it.
I had a thread on my diy install but I lost all my online pictures so every image I attached here is gone. Mine is a continuous work in progress and it isn't my DD so I took a LONG time to install.

well I'm kind of a diy guy but putting on the turbo kit is kinda of a heart pounder for me i can't afford for anything to go wrong, so I'm just going to drive to florida for rodney to do the install and have him ship the car back! plus tuning this car here in texas is a major issue specially in the dallas area! so rodney would be my one stop shop, a very far one!
by the way i did happen to see that thread you had on the diy for the turbo install, it seems to be a lot of work!
