Project TL: Engine swap has begun!

So after waiting for all the parts to arrive, we finally began the engine swap. The engine is consist of:

1. 06 RL shortblock
2. 03 CL TypeS piston 10.5:1cr (you could use RL piston with 11.0:1 cr)
3. 07 TL TypeS cylinder head, camshaft, valves, etc

So far right now we have taken the stock engine out. It took us 1 day to do that without much trouble. The engine is HEAVY! We also sent out the RL short block to the machine shop so they could put in the CL TypeS piston. It will be back next monday.

In the mean time, I have filled the motor mount and transmission mount with polyurethane. We are also trying to figure out a way to install a tranny cooler while the motor is out.

Here are a few pics.
This is the stock engine

TL without the engine:

very nice work.

while everything is apart you should get the crankshaft knife edged.
http://www.faliconcranks.com/crankwk.htm

also did you look into dry sump system and electric water pump?

replace your auto tensioners while your there.

good luck and keep us updated.

I am running the supercharger with the 3.5L. The goal is to run 10psi thus the slightly lowered compression piston. However I will start with the 4.5psi pulley and hook up the E-manage to get it tuned first.

Hopfully everything will turn out as planned. Along with the new engine we will be installing the custom Dr.Evil torque converter.

I did think about getting a custom turbo made. Locally there is a very reputable shop that could do the whole setup for around 8~10k. That's including all the pipings, turbo, electronics, and tuning. One good thing about turbo is that it can provide a lot more power then a supercharger, but if you want to go high boost, then you will need to rebuild your motor. If you are only planning to run low boost, then I don't think it's worth it to spend all that money to make a custom turbo kit as the comptech supercharger is readily avalaible and is proven to be reliable.

With the supercharger running at 8~10psi, it is more then enough power considering this is a family sedan and that the supercharger provides smoother power on the street.

very nice project. with the funds being spent, have you considered upgrading the piston to a forged one, for about 800 more, you will have a bullet proof motor. what year is your tl?

I did consider having the engine built with custom crankshaft, rods, piston, etc. However with the power goal and the limit of the supercharger, I decided that it is not worth the money. If i were going for a turbo, then I would definitely build up the motor, but with such high power, other parts such as the transmission, axle, etc might not be able to take it.

I remember in one of your post you mentioned your car dynoed at around 460whp with turbo at 10psi. Were you running on stock internals at that time? I know for sure I won't be making that much power because i am running a supercharger, but hopfully I can still make some impressive numbers. Guess we will never know until I put it on the dyno!

the comptech supercharger is DEF ineffecient at 10psi. i dont think you will see that amount of boost out of it. i think its max is about 7psi.

someone mentioned the mdx 3.7, it achieve that by BOTH increased bore and stroke.

Yes the MDX has longer stroke and bigger bore. That is the exact reason why I didn't go with the 3.7. It doesn't use the same block and head anymore and there might be fitment issues with the motor, tranny, or the supercharger. Also the redline on the 3.7 is lowered to 6500rpm.

The comptech charger is capable of making much more boost then 10psi. If you look around, there are many people running the Eaton M62 supercharger up to 15~20psi. The Cobalt SS comes stock with the M62 supercharger running at 12psi.

I know for a fact it can go over 7psi as I was running the high boost pulley on the stock motor and it was running at over 8psi without any problem. Sure the air might be heated up a bit with higher boost, but that's what the boost cooler is for!

i was under the impression that the blower is really at its best at 8psi, and a 10psi max. sorry.

Cool! I'll have to drop by Advance when it's done to check it out. Well at least now I know where to go if I ever plan on dropping a J32A2 + 6-speed in my car. Finding the parts is the hard part though .

You should be ok, but I'd have like to have seen you go for at least the pistons. The crank in that motor is already awesome, as i have one that i can't use and it's a very stout crank. (anyone needs a crank, hit me up) The rods that come with the RL imo could be better. They are made of powder metal where as the earlier j motors were forged steel. They use powder metal rods to cut back on production costs. Pauter makes the 3.5 L rod for this motor, i have them.

I have stock internals on my present motor and did dyno 464 with it. I've been pounding the heck out of it for several months now and can't specualate when it will fail. The failure, if it does happen, possibly would occur in the pistons as it's the weak point under boost. I'd guess you'll see in the neiborhood of 350ish at the wheels. Really cool project and love to see you guys experiment.

That rl block is nice, oil squirters under the pistons will help reduce detonation, a very cool feature. If it's not to late, consider doing pistons, I think it will add a tremendous amount of longivity to your ride. CP makes them and I could help you out on that, not price, but point you in the right direction, problem is, they have a horrible time getting them to you, it could be a several week wait at times. Cheers!

As of right now, it would be too late for me to wait for the custom rods and piston. I already had the engine out and don't want the car to just sit there for a month. I guess if anything goes wrong, then I would definitely go with the stronger stuff. However knowing the fact that you are running over 400whp with stock internals, it makes me feel better. lol

nice going

But I'm curious why you didn't take the already built '04 MDX block with '03 CL-S pistons from the guy in AZ that av6ent posted a while ago? The motor was built and inexpensive . Simple swap and done
