Noob J-Pipe question

First, I searched.. went through many threads and there is a good chance I could have just missed finding it

Also when searching I did not know what else to look up other than j-pipe

What I want to know is what is the name of the piece(s) in the image with the red arrows pointing to.. they look like wicker basket type of tubes on all our j-pipes.. also would like to know what the function of it is

I see it on all of them but just don’t know what it does other than look pretty

its a flex pipe.
the engine torques or moves when accelerating.
this section of mesh allows the pipe to move with the engine.

thanks j-space

if that truly is for flexing then not sure if removing it would be a good idea...

now that I know what that is it makes sense since our engine does move a lot with OEM mounts.. I imagine if we get stiffer mounts then maybe getting rid of it.. but that is just a theory

Older designs come without it. You want the flex pipe. It saves you a lot of headaches from you're welds on the pipe cracking over long periods of stress.

You are correct sir. Flex pipe is just like it says a flexible piece of pipe that flexes when the engine vibrates or you hit a bump and the exhaust moves up and down. It is an isolating device for the sections of exhaust so they can move independently. The final benefit is that it reduces stress on welds in the exhaust system as the pieces move.

Correct Mr.SharksBreath. Here is the comment made by MrHeeltoe in the "Coming soon to 3G TL from ATLP" (click here) thread.

It will also be the first part of the exhaust to deteriorate and give out. Its not solid metal and crap will get in it and cause rusting faster.

But is a needed part in installation/removal and engine torque (haha torque on a Honda).
