New filter or aftermarket intake?
Hey guys,
So my previous cars that I've owned I've always put a K&N Typhoon CAI kit on for sound and a little performance. I absolutely love the TL (although it doesn't have the power my '99 Cobra had...) and I want the best power and mpg without having to spend a bunch of money and having an annoying sound.
So far I've had the mid-muffler removed and I love the way that sounds and was going to do a RV6 J-pipe but feared the sound would be raspy if I didn't do an aftermarket resonator as well...
So should I play it safe and buy the K&N replacement filter (33-2299) for $50? Will I get 1-2 more mpg over the stocker (which looks clean to me)??
Or should I opt to buy either a cheap eBay CAI or buy a K&N CAI? From your experiences which helps out in MPG the most and what type of sound changes will I notice if I buy an aftermarket CAI (I know just a filter won't change the sound).
Thank you for the help!

The car sounds much better after a CAI, They really don't add much power but help prevent sucking in hot air so it doesn't pull timing. I got a $75 ebay one, fits great and sounds very aggressive.

Cai... No mpg gains no power gains just noise gains . Loss of response and low end tourqe suffers. I can guarantee it !!
I took out my k&n intake and i just miss the sound of it. I dont recommend it but if you still want, make me an offer and ill sell it to you for not to much .

If I get the K&N Typhoon, how loud exactly are we talking? And how easy would it be to clean the filter on the Typhoon system because it's a 2 piece intake...?
I'm thinking just get the drop-in and hopefully gaining a mpg or two.

If I buy the K&N Typhoon, is it easier to clean than other CAIs because you can undo the clamp (SRI end) and take out the 2nd half of the pipe and the filter and just clean the filter???
Or is it just as hard to clean as all other CAIs???

Dont buy a Cai, nothing will improve. It will sound better. Its not easier to clean since the second part of the intake has a bracket bolted to the chasis....

pros- hardly any, maybe a bit better performance (1 or 2 hp) and a few more mpg. also it will sound pretty aggressive.
cons- head soak, also run the risk of sucking water into the filter and ruining your motor, not worth the money for the "pros". get a drop in filter and you will have nearly the same results as the cai.

OP ..... Just do some basic research on here . I garuntee you'll find your answers . I wouldnt worry about sucking up water unless your using your car as a boat or submarine ! I mean the filter needs to be completely submerged for it to suck in enough water. Ive drive in all out rain storms with my DC Sports CAI and haven had any issues

if you're worried about sucking up water with a CAI, just don't drive through a river.

A higher flowing filter absolutely can not help mpg. Not 1mpg, not .1mpg, nothing. It is impossible.
