NEEDS HELP deciding which exhaust system for 2008 tl

alright Im currently looking at three exhaust system and I need help deciding which one I should get. The three exhaust system I am looking at are in order of preference: greddy evo 2, HKS hi-power, and comptech. Please let me know what you guys think and give me some advice. Thank you

I am pretty new to buying an exhaust system so I have trouble understanding the different terminology of exhaust system and if you guys could help me on some of these terms (i tried to do research for it but nothing came up).

j shift-j pipe-what is this used for and does it add any sound or deepness to the exhaust system or is it just performance base?

catless-what is a catless exhaust system? what does it do and what are its benefits?

also I still need help between those three exhaust. I been on youtube to try to distinguish the sound but they all sound alike on video and I was wondering if anyone would know what it sounds like in person and give a description on each of those exhaust system sound. I am looking for a deep throaty sound and not a raspy ricey sounding car. can you let me know which one has the deepest sound out of the three? Thanks...

1st there is a major problem.

and it is, u are trying to compare the evo2's, hks, and COMPTECH....its a problem because comptech is the QUIETEST exhaust, and greddy is the loudest. so u need to decide how loud u want it.

j shift j pipe is www.rv6-p.com

but id get the XLR8 j pipe www.excelerateperformance.com or the ATLP v2 www.acuratlparts.com

catless means all of the catalytic converters have been removed. u will fail the smog check if ur state does that, but u will not get a check engine light.

www.rv6-p.com - primary cat deletes(pre cat deletes) and the race/test pipe which eliminates the 3rd cat which is after the j pipe.

race pipe = straight through, no restriction
test pipe = pretty much a small resonator, it is straight through.

if u dont want rasp, dont do the cat deletes. want a deep tone, just do the j pipe, race pipe, and a cat back exhaust

btw greddy evo2 is a catback system, and is DIY

HKS is not, its only mufflers, u will need a shop to build the catback. which is not DIY

It's all super confusing, I hear ya! You'll start picking up a few things here and there though, eventually. As for your given exhaust systems, it really depends on how loud you want to go. I personally have the Comptech Exhaust system, and I can speak from experience that it's durable and an well-developed, made product. Trust me, it's been through hell and back; I've yet to have any discoloration, cracks, etc. The main reason why I went with Comptechs was to prolong my warranty; Honda and Comptech have a small pack, and thus Comptech products don't void our warranties. However, I'm really GLAD that I went with the Comptechs. It doesn't have much drone and it's style is still sleek to my eyes, till this day; in other words, it doesn't look ricey!

Cat-less: Our cars have 3 catalytic converts; two in the front (inside the engine bay) that come directly from the block (motor) off the exhaust manifolds (like headers), and another towards the back. When websites claim to be a CAT-BACK system, it simply means from the catalytic convert back. The J-Pipe comes after the first two catalytic converters off the exhaust manifolds (on the engine) and bolts directly onto the catalytic converts (2 from the engine). Going cat-less simply means that you have a true exhaust system with NO catalytic converters (illegal in all states). The benefits? It's all free flowing without any bottle-necking. The cons? Smell from gas, some discoloration and loss of low end torque (because you no longer have the bottle-necking that creates back-pressure).

Hope that helps! I'm no expert...most certainly an amateur compared to everyone else on this forum, but this is what I've understood...

GO WITH COMPTECHS!

here's a link to a few sound clips that i posted a few days ago. note that this is LOUD (YES, comptechs CAN BE LOUDER) for comptechs, and it's only because i have all of richie's products (pre-cat d, j-pipe, and test pipe), as far as exhaust setups go...

hmmmm so greco what you're saying is if I get the HKS it only comes with a muffler? cause I look up hks and its like 1k just like the greddy evo2 and I cant imagine that hks selling just a muffler for 1k. also I was wondering does anyone have any experience on the other two exhaust like greddy evo 2 and hks? I got a review from erik on comptech so I need reviews for the other two. Im trying to go for a deep throaty semi-loud system. not too quiet not too loud/raspy. also my last question is if I buy the catback evo 2 exhaust does it come with a jpipe and a race pipe or is that bought separately or is it customized at the muffler shop? Thanks for all the help!

I have heard a modded stock system and the greddy. Opposite ends of the spectrum for sure. However, the loudest I ever heard was a rental 07 tl with the mid pipe dropped: sounded like a bpu twinturtbo supra when it hit the rev limiter! The Evo is more of a boy racer exhaust because the cans and tips are ridiculous to say the least. The sound is raspy at first but the ecu recalibrates and the tone mellow out. It is deep though so it will pentrate walls and you'll be heard in quieter areas: no more stealth. There is a bit of a drone at lowere highway speeds too so watch out for that.

Yes and no.. The rental tl we had got pretty raspy blowing thru stock precats and jpipe wide-open. Cats do a really good job of mellowing out exhaust note, they act like another muffler... But not quite like a resonator because a greddy Evo will still drone with stock cats.

im not holding back this time...

DUDE how the FUCK are u comparing an AFTERMARKET exhaust system to the shitty LOANER STOCK EXHAUST SYSTEM

jesus christ man

obviously the cats mellow the exhaust note but they rob power!

every exhaust without a mid muffler will have drone. the end

If it were up to me I would get the xlr8 all over again.....It looks and sounds great...Now if I had a type s and went back a few months when atlp was producing the quads I'd get that hands down. just my $0.02

XLR8 FTW! but seriously as you can tell everyone here is rooting for their own system that they have on their car. Any choice you go with will be similar to a degree you just need to figure out how loud you want it. Go with Evo2 if you want in your face hear you before I c you exhaust and then at the other end like mentioned you have comptech. If you look at the designs comptech has a mid-muffler and the others do not. My 2 cents worth.
Evo loudest
XLR8 + ATLP similar in the middle (but both aggressive)
Comptech quietest

Ditto I missed out on ATLP quads but with XLR8 system I am more than happy and I have grown to like the tips more because it looks stock but BAM!! hit that throttle and there isnt a question. Ive received many complements on how nice a system it is.
