My DIY J&R Turbo Install

My DIY J&R Turbo Install
Here is the beginning of my DIY install of Rodney and John's kit.
Battery relocate. I ran mine through a grommet under the rear seat and tied it along the brake lines.
Fuel Pump replacement
Pics of the sending unit and removing the nut on the tank. I am glad I invested $50 in the tool. The service manual says it needs to be 60ft lbs. That's pretty tight
That's all I have for today. Had to go back to working on the putting in the shower surround. Will keep adding to this as I progress.

That's right. The stock cable goes off the battery in two directions, one to the starter and the other to the fuse block. So I just ran the 0/1 cable to the starter and 4ga to the fuse block. I couldn't find a terminal like the stock one so I just went to Lowes and bought a short piece of soft copper tubing. Crushed one end, bent it over, drilled a hole and it fit perfectly.

Went out to the garage today but it freaking snowed out today so the garage is pretty cold. I struggled with the adapter harness first trying to bundle up groups of wires but the best thing is to leave the wires loose and removing the elbow to the HVAC made getting my hands in there easier
I get everything hooked up. start it up and it's missing like crazy and the CEL is flashing. So I unplug and put it back to stock, no problems. I looked at the harness and a pin had come out of the FIC end. At this point my hands are cold so I quit. Going back at it when it warms up.
One thing I found out from Paul is that there is an unterminated brown wire that is supposed to be connected to the 0-5V connection on your external wideband meter.
Here are some pics I took, not all that interesting.

Made a little more progress and have the intercooler installed with the piping.
I am skipping around a bit with regard to the manual. I have an inspection due in June so I am thinking I will do as much as I can, get it inspected and then finish.
Some points for those interested.
1. I centered the intercooler because the manual wasn't perfectly clear. But it turns out that on the right side, you use the hole that was originally used for the hood latch cable clip. Then measure over 15 1/8 inches and drill the other hole.
2. I first thought the pipes weren't going to fit but after removing one body pin, then everything fit fine.
3. Not quite sure how I am going to attach the bottom of the intercooler or what to do with the power steering cooler.

So your car will be down this whole time?

My car has been down since I started this. Now that I am getting into this, I am going to finish is as soon as possible. I'll figure out the inspection deal later.
Put the BOV on. Another tip, put that sucker on BEFORE bolting up the intercooler. It's hard to seat the snap ring because you can see/access behind the BOV.

The kit is more complex than it looks, Rodney put a lot of time into fine tuning this kit and finding parts that would work best for the TL. The turbo kit has been attempted by a few members who knew what they were doing only to fail , this kit is the only one that worked. Look at the turbo thread banbela the person who started that thread failed and left the forum because of it.

One on the right for me

Failed to get a running turbo going for the 3G is what I mean. Point is this is not easy to do for a variety of reasons. I suspect it was more than the tranny, since he gave up and left the forum. The tunning end of things was the biggest hurdle prior to the Fic, but other issues are still there.
On a more topic related note, your progress on the install is very promissing. This kit was meant to be DIY so seeing someone do just that is confidence inspiring.

Yes, that is my reason for doing this. I am hoping that this will help J&R as well which will only help us with more options in the future.
I am taking my time to do this and there are some things that are not documented that are minor and requires some level of ingenuity.
The gauges are installed, not sure if I like the look but I put them on the pillar down low near the speaker but the 2nd on had to be mounted higher.
My time here has seen many attempts but we never really saw any proof. I would imagine plumbing is the 'easy' part but the tune seemed to be the big issue which Rodney and John has been able to do.

You can use the emanage but you need both types one to scale back larger injectors and another to retard timing. Most of the features can't be used. The AEM Fic controls both and well. The TL ecu is very tricky and will take changes made with other piggyback computers and revert back to stock settings, which would suck if you dropped a couple hundred bucks on a tune.
