Hi guys Im new to AZ. So far im liking what Im seeing in regards to all of the co-op and advice. Im thinking of purchasing an '05 tl. Id like the 07 type s but seeing as the 05 puts out 270hp on paper, 286hp isnt that far to reach or exceed with acpl of bolt on's. Heres my question, automatic trannies, what if any type of issues could I encounter or expect, if any at all for that matter. Thanks in advance for any feedback. UptownArty

WTF...how can I forget Opel. I thought the wink would be enough for you to know I was totally joking. Not to mention the beginning of the next sentence I say, "on a serious note". Jeez...ONE failed off topic thread and I gets no respek around this place...

I DO wish I was high though...that would be nice too.

...a paradox if you will...
and you're not far off with the man crush thing.

and if that's not clear...I'm KIDDING!

uptownarty: I think I'd hedge my bets with the manual any day of the week over the auto's. Although the 3G's are more robust than the 2's...the automatic trannies IMO are always going to be more likely to have a problem than a manual. I think stripping gears etc comes from ripping the car...not normal daily driving.

Arty.. for performance.. the 04-06 MT is unmatched. Reliability depends on the upkeep. If you take good care of the TL, it'll take good care of you. Welcome btw!

Opel, back on subject. You only had to purchase the countershaft and one gear?

I was looking at the cost of the internals and they can add up quickly. I am just trying to be as prepared as possible for what I think is inevitable for me too.

I saw some treatments for the whole assy in the $200-300 range. I'd be skeptical about quality & standards of some of these companies though.

i only bought what was broken....thats right, countershaft and countershaft 3rd gear..somewhere around $300 for both.... depending on situations, someone might change oil seals and such...or whatever might seem worn out...me, i just changed those 2 things, as far as inside the tranny.

I ended up changing the throw out bearing but thats just me since i was in there

You can't really be prepared bcs you dont know what will break...the only thing you can do is have a spare tranny sitting, but other than that, you can't just buy parts and have them sitting around.
Yes buying internals individually adds up...the most expensive is the differential, without the gear, around $1000

Wow...and where you pick up random parts like this? At Acura directly? If parts alone were 300 for you, this was probably a $1500 job.

Wow those pictures are awesome...reminds me, actually, of what I do for a living....die casting transmission housings. I've had issues with those magnet slots before, and was pissed that I had to deal with it, but I am very glad I saw this, b/c it just proves how important they are!!

You are a brave soul, good job!

I picked mine up at Acura. Of course they had to be special ordered since they dont stock tranny parts...the closest warehouse from me (nyc) that has such parts was in California, and after that, Japan. I had to wait about a week for them. You pretty much can get any tranny part individually through Acura.
It would've probably been more than $1500. I think Acura rates a clutch job at 14 hrs or so..that after taxes alone should be around $1500 for labor only, and its less work. Having someone take the trannny apart, and go through this would add quiet a bit on top of $1500

Stuck to the magnet is where i found all 4 pieces of broken tooth. As you can imagine, one piece of broken tooth floating around the tranny waiting to be caught in between 2 other gears, if there was no magnet at all.

Initially, when i saw the half the tooth broken off the countershaft, somehow quickly i thought that, it may have failed first, then got caught up in the other gear and caused them to break. But at the same time, it should have left some marks on the gear matched to the one with the broken teeth, which would've been the mainshaft 3rd gear.

Still, it could've happened, before it got sucked by the magnet. It may have not...i really dont know, simply because there was not one single mark on the mainshaft 3rd gear.

But for now, its all over lol

big red Torin...its a light weight aluminum lack...1.5 ton capacity, low profile...the only thing low enough i could find to squeeze under the car between the wheel and the bumper to catch the subframe without driving the wheels on top of a 2x4 or smth lol

i think it was about $130

I have a sneaking suspicion that I have fallen victim to this issue.

At first it was just a light tapping noise in third gear. It's not speed or RPM related though. It's only when the throttle is say 40%+.

So I've babied third. Now today I noticed I'm starting to hear a "whooshing" noise in both third and fourth...
