I've used the K&N drop-in on a couple of my vehicles, past and present. The biggest changes I've noticed are slightly better throttle response on the CL-S's J32 and a 1~2mpg increase in the MDX's J35. (Every bit helps on the MDX now-a-days.)
A CAI would probably provide a better ROI.

I installed one on my car simply as a replacement. Honestly can't say I see any real improvement, but it's certainly not worse.
Most of the time people feel an improvement simply because their old filter was so clogged that going to a clean one frees up some hp/MPG.

The K&N is better than average paper filter in performance and function, plus its just clean and re-oil once a year, and it last forever!!! Never have to replace unless you drive it more than 1 MILLION Miles- that would be impressive miles on a TL !!!!]
I know it says to clean every 50k miles, and I also know it never hurts to clean it every year.
The refill kit for it is 10 bucks and does it 5 times!
More can be gained by removing the lower intake resonator box (assuming gen3 same as gen2) That gives far more cubic feet of freeflow air for the engine to draw thru the less restricted flow of the K&N-
Its a win-win with K&N ..... hey, I should trademark that- Trademark!!
