K&M or AEM Cold Air Intake?
K&M or AEM Cold Air Intake?
Hi guys, a bit new to the forum here but i am having trouble selecting a Cold Air Intake for my '05 TL. I can't decide between a K&M, or AEM. I wanted to know if anyone knows or has one, how is it? and which one should i get, if any. Thanks

considering that we have a cold air intake system from the factory, you wont gain much from either of the two aftermarket systems you listed.
if power is your main goal, people upgrade their stock intake manifold to the 09+ 3.7 SHAWD intake manifold and its throttle body. this setup is superior to our stock setup, and a 3 inch intake is too SMALL.
move up to a 4 inch intake and you will gain!
so, it all depends on you and your goals. if you want a $300 noise maker, go ahead and purchase the K&N or AEM intake. it doesnt matter, as they both provide noise and are basically the same.

Would a 3" or 4" custom intake provide a lot of standalone power? Or is it the sort of mod that only supplements other larger ones?
I've thought about fabricating a large diameter CAI and just swapping in the stock for Smog, and the prices I've come to are cheaper than a lot of name brand CAIs.
And would I have to worry about a MAF and heavy fab, or would a custom system be a pretty easy bolt on?
(Sorry about hijacking this thread..)

^seeing as we already have a cold air intake system...you wont see much gains fromm adding a cold air intake .
if the throttle body is the restriction..the obvious answer is to get a bigger intake manifold and throttle body. only then would MORE air be useful.
both of you can save money by just taking off the OEM resonator on the intake. and relocating some of the stock piping to direct air flow right to the throttle body.
this will provide a throaty sound when you're on the throttle and mimick the brand name intakes.

The K&N is better if you want to be able to switch to a short ram but the AEM V2 CAI is the most popular. You can expect 6-8 whp with the intake based on dynos. I've linked you to both below:
