^Did u just take off the resonator? or made it like a cold air

I dont know how ur ganan do it with the bumper on. Your ganna have to stick your arm all the way in to unbolt a screw holding the resonator.

Dont be lazy and take off the bumper..Its really not that hard. At first I didnt feel like taking off the bumper, but its a whole lot easier to work with it off. And it might save u some time.

You cant go wrong if u already have a drop-in filter..

The thing I used in my picture is 4". It fits so perfectly through there, so I dont have to worry about it moving around.

I think trying to get the resonator off without taking off the bumper is making things harder. At least that's the conclusion I reached after trying to do it the "easy" way. Trust me...you'll thank me later.

Same with the Peripheral install for the ipod...there were a few threads that said you could install without removing panels or anything but after 5 min of being frustrated I found it easier to do it right and get the stuff out of the way.

I'm going to do this over the weekend. I am waiting on new foglight bulbs to come in and will knock this out while I have the bumper off.

I like the dryer hose tube idea, but I'm worried about the heat sink. I had this same set-up with my old Jetta turbo and it worked well, but I was always concerned about the metal material absorbing too much heat.

Are there any alternatives that are plastic or a different material?

It's a very short piece...and it's basically just redirecting where it's getting the air from. I wouldn't worry too much about it, although I didn't bother to do that at all so that isn't saying much.

You can try wrapping it with black electric wiring tape..thats what I did before with an old intake I made. Worked pretty well...

Well...I'd have to check with a temp gun going in before and after. I would say the heat tape made for moto mufflers would probably work best. IMO electrical tape when heated turns into a big mess!

I say just leave it open period. I'd have to see the dyno gains to go on the mission otherwise.

not sure if you can do it this way with a 3G, but on my 2G, i just took off the front tire, unclipped the inner fender and did it that way

i just took the resonator off. definitely needed to take the bumper off to wedge it out, even with the bumper off it wasn't really that easy to slide out.

I agree...it is a biznitch...maybe it's clamped in there better than with the 2G!?!? I don't know. Did you like the results?

i think the box on a 2G tls is smaller than base. i love they way it sounds. with the k&n drop in, you can really hear the air being sucked in, and i like punching it next to ricers to show them how a car is supposed to sound

Well it's good to hear u feel the gains just from removing the resonator. I recently installed a CAI and dont feel any difference. Then i think to my self why in the world would i. If a CAI is only good for about 5hp then a 5hp gain on a 260hp motor is not going to be felt. lol.

Perception may have a lot to do with it...and the sound. The sound is sweet...acceleration seems better and MPG went up a little for me.

and best of all...

^ Yeah I did this yesterday. For those thinking about it... take the bumper off. It's a bitch to do it otherwise. And you can actually use the plastic piece connected to the resonator for a "CAI". I'm planning on just using this and not getting a CAI (I have a drop in). If I wantto add a blower later, a CAI would just waste money. It definitely growls more. Can't really tell if there's more pick up, but it seems like it's sucking the air in more directly into the throttle body. If you take a look at the resonator, it seems like it's sucking air from inside the engine bay somewhere, it's really convoluted.

Oh and for some confidence inspiring videos?

Front BUmper removal... this is a GREAT guide...
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169101

Taking out resonator (well he's installing a CAI) Another detailed guide
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169110

And if those links don't work you can still look it up on youtube. It's easy. If you're doing it by yourself, it will probably take you an hour. I was going slow and had to get around my A-Spec kit, and made sure the plastics were in the right places before reattaching the bumpers. Good luck!

i concur wholeheartedly!
about reusing the plastic piece...maybe i'll put it back on but i didn't want to cut away that piece of plastic from the resonator (i got the impression it was riveted)

I think it is riveted in some way... but the guy in the video just drills it out... I wish I knew that when i was taking apart the resonator though... I just yanked and bent that thing out... oh well... at least I can drill it out easier now and route it down to cooler air using OEM parts.

Did you take out all 3 bolts? if so...take out the little extra tube from in front of the battery (up top) and pull down and toward you like heck!

GL!

It definitely needed some finesse...and by that I mean brute force.

Talk about brute force........finally got it off with a lot of brute force. Took me just over 2 hours from start to finish.

Went for a "test drive" and throttle response definitely seems a bit better, maybe its just placebo Not a noticeable difference in terms of sound.

I attached on a hose similar to what Jwong did but i reused the tube that originally came up beside the battery. Attached it with the same rubber coupler. Hopefully, this will reduce the amount of hot air sucked in after engine gets hot.

Overall, i say its a good mod as long as you dont mind a but of frustration (or maybe im just mechanically retarted). And cant complain when its free

BTW, when i put everything back together, i didnt bother putting back the bottom strake on. The "flap-like, long thing under the bumper. Will that affect anything?

Ha ha...I doubt it. Yes...lotsa muscle to get that sumbitch out! Hmmm...good idea to leave the hose...I guess I was a little concerned with being 1/2 a foot closer to water in case of flooding. Did you punch it? I noticed a difference in sound above 5K rpms...when vtec kicked.

1)Did you drill out the 2 rivets? If so it would not take much force.

2) YES that flap-like long black thing is actually there to direct air towards your radiator. You are gonna want to reinstall that...

I stand corrected!

About the rivets...that's to separate that hose from the top part of the resonator. He's talking about wiggling and pulling the whole assembly out!

Actually you might be able to use the piece that was on the left side of the battery, so you might not have to drill out the rivets. Is the piece on the left side of the battery the same diameter as the piece going into the air filter?

What I did...and I copied other members. Is when you remove the silencer and all the plastic plumbing. You can cut off a section and attach it to the air box...instead of laundry duct.

Doug, u gotta plug those 2 flaps back. Its to connect your bumper to the car.

Remember when you remove the intake resonator, you are trying to make it less restriction. A 3" tube would help much because that pretty much the same size as the stock. A ideal size would be 4"

and u wouldnt want it too low or long, that would somewhat restrict the air as well. You want it low enough just outside the engine bay.

heat rises, cold air is on the bottom

I think w/that short a distance the 3" is ok. I wanna say it's the resonator itself that was restricting the airflow. About low and long...water is an issue in the MIA so I would keep that hole way the hell up near the filter.

so for you 3G guys, does the car kinda hum with the resonator out? the 2G does, it takes awhile to get used to

So there's 2 main plugs in the middle under the bumper. Unplugs those then, there are 2 bolts and 1 screw on each wheel well. After removing those, remove the rest that u see under the car.

After, u carefully pull off the bumper..The first time might be a bit tight, but it'll come off

I only hear it if I get on it...otherwise sounds nice and stock. Just the way I like it.
