Getting pro cats installed in CA

Does anyone know if shops will install pro cats in California? I heard you are not allowed to mess with your cats unless they are dead?

Ask around. You aren't supposed to remove and replace them, but most shops won't care too much.

Replacing the cats with something aftermarket on any OBD 2 car is straight up illegal. It may be tough finding someone good who will do it. Shadier places will do it, but then you gotta worry about them screwing something up...

That is not going to happen any time soon. The only allowable cats to put on an OBD 2 car are OEM and rebuilt OEM, as the law currently stands.

Are these bad boys going to pass smog or will I have to take them off to get the car smoged? I know visual might not pass but what about the sniffer? Also how hard is it to put these on?

They would probably pass a tailpipe test. For sure they are going to be less effective for smog than oem cats, due to the lower cell count.

Find the import tuner shop and ask where they go

With the normally Ultra Low emissions of the TL- we have a little room on the test

In CA, any replacement of a perfectly working cat is illegal and it has to be replaced with an OE replacement. You will likely pass the tail pipe test but you will fail visual inspection.

You will be fine in most other states. Some states will require you to prove why you needed to replace the cat so prepare to show how it is defective although I've yet to see someone ask for that info.
