Ok, so exactly how many cats do our cars have? If the XLR8 jpipe deletes one. And you guys are talking about deleting 2 more... How is this not throwing CELs.. Or what exactly are you "hollowing out" and where the hell is it located

Ack is hollowing out the two primary cats that are attached to each head on the engine. I think XLR8's J-pipe deletes the 3rd cat which is not monitored, so it will not trigger a Cel. As far as the two primary cats, a defouler is used to avoid a Cel. The primary cats are on the front and rear of the engine, were the exhaust leaves the heads.

Crowbar and a mallet works wonders too. Or an acetylene torch to melt the insides out. My biggest hesitation on doing this is I don't feel like messing with removing the rear cat unless it's clogged. If I wasn't worried about getting the material in the heads as it's so close, it would probably be really easy to drop the J pipe and pull the postcat O2's and chisel away for a few minutes with them still on the car. Start it up to blow the rest out, then reinstall the O2's with a spacer. I had done it on the car with an older beater with actual exhaust manifolds, once the honeycomb is compromised the rest blows out pretty quick.

Just curious if anyone ever did it on the car, maybe a few quick wacks, start the car to blow some material out, rinse and repeat until it's done.

Props for the OP trying to make some extra money but if you can take your pre cats off you can gut them your self for free... Its simple.

Agreed. I can't imagine paying for someone to guy my cats. A hammer and prybar/long screwdiver is all you need. I almost did it myself but I don't feel like buying another set when emissions time comes around in 2 years. You're going to pay a lot more than the cost of precat deletes if you have to buy another pair of converters.

Yeah it turned out to be easy, but it creates a huge mess which sucks. These are made of ceramic so over time these actually can start to break off from engine heat and get sucked back up into the engine.

Have any of you hollowed out the cats and noticed your car runs very rich? a little black smoke when you punch the accelerator? overwhelming smell of burned fuel?

Thinking about trying to find some used cats at my local auto salvage and banging them out. These cats look like a pain to remove also. How long to remove for someone who has done it before. Also how much do the dufoulers run roughly? Trying to weigh my options on going this route or just getting pcd

I'll take a drive out to the dirty jersey Bruce. How much would you charge for install?

Yeah I'll have to keep my eyes open. I like the option of no rasp from gutting factory cats if it yields enough hp gains. Still no dyno?

Almost like paying nothing in replace with your stock one. Good condition stock cats go for about $200.

Very interesting. I have a 2013 TL AWD 3.7 liter. Are they a fit for this car? I live in SJ. Not sure how close that is to you? Are you a mechanic were you can do the install?
