Exhaust Noise Inquiry
Ok, so there is something i dont understand.
I was previously running stage 3 with a dynomax resonator and it was generally quiet until i get to around 2.5k or 3k. Then the sound comes on.
Now i have switched to a custom magnaflow setup consisting of:
Magnaflow Hi-Flow Cat > Magnaflow Resonator > Magnaflow Mufflers
All of which are connected by 2.5" pipes. I love the sound and everything but what i dont understand is, why does it get really quiet after 3k. It would have a nice growl as i accelerate but once past 3k, it almost sounds stock. This is really weird and its bothering me.![ugh](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/ugh.gif)
Anybody know a solution? Take out the Res? Put in a CAI?
What I am really looking for is to keep the magnaflow sound at the lower end while having a "stage3" tone for the higher rpm's

It's probably not getting quieter than your previous exhaust after 3K, it's probably just much louder at the lower rpms.
Generally speaking larger tubing in stainless will give you more consistant volume at all rpms. Mild steel smaller tubing will peak more in the resonant areas.
This doesn't always hold true but it's a good general rule of thumb.
Have you actually listened to it outside of the car with someone else driving to see what it sounds like? Muffler placement can have an effect on how it sounds inside.

IHC, thanks for the insightful (as always) reply. Yes, I have followed it and heard it from behind. It does "quiet down". But I know its definitely quieter, not just in comparison to the loud low rpms, as I have compared it to another TL with "only" a mid-muffler removal and AEM CAI. The so called "stage1" was definitely louder. Just had less growl compared to my magnaflow during normal driving.
I'm almost contemplating whether I should take out the magnaflow resonator and put the dynomax in. Or just get my own CAI

This is very true, i took my mid-muffler off and the car has a perfect growl from 2k-3.5k rpms after that u cant hear exhaust at all just the annoying sound of the engine. But thats just in the car, when ppl are outside they can hear the exhaust mostly.

dougboy i just installed a similar setup but before i put it on my car i tried the no res/no mid muffler and it sounded nice past 4k rpm but as mentioned before in other threads there was a hint of rasp at about 2.5k rpm. i think maybe its because its a stock exhaust, and it doesnt sound perfect with a straight pipe from the cat but with this new exhaust system try with no res for a little?
i noticed with a CAI u get more sound from the engine vs the exhaust when passing 4k rpm
