exhaust ideas/questions

ok so i have an 04' TL and have been reading the threads about the removal of the resonator and mid muffler, and i like the way the stock exhaust sounds when the mid muffler is removed, but i dont think its loud enough. and i was thinking, what if i removed the mid muffler, and the stock mufflers, and replaced the stock mufflers in the back with some canister mufflers, such as apexi or magnaflow, or something univeral, and had the mid replaced with a straight pipe, leaving the resonator? what do yall think this would sound like? or maybe leaving the stock mid muffler in there, and just going with cans in the back? I figured id ask before i started tinkering and paying $$ until i got it right... any help is good help

you need to make up your mind first.

second, most of us who did simple Stage 1-3 muffler deletes did it not to sound ricey. Sounds like you want something to shatter some ear drums

and for more useful posters after me, do you just want the sound or would you want gains?

gains would be nice, but chances are i wont get more that 10 rwhp, so just a good clean sound would be nice

There are some aftermarket bolt-on catbacks for TL:

ATLP (requires TypeS rear bumper/lip)
Greddy
Comptech

There are vids of all three, but I suggest you check them out in person to compare the differences (loudness).

Custom catback is another option.

ive watched the vids and i like the sound of the greddy, but not the price. thats why i asked about doing a custom-type muffler/resonator set up, and what it would sound like. i just want something noticable. something ppl will hear, and realize. cause its too quiet stock.

i really like the way the quad magnaflows look, as well as the evo2, btw. but would those be too loud if i removed the mid muffler, and replaced stock mufflers with either of those?

I recommend the Comptech. It looks great and doesn't sound like a civic on crack. I had the Greddy and it was way too much for a luxury car. Comptech sounds similar to the low growls of the European aftermarket exhausts which at least have some class.

Before any of you make any exhaust decisions, wait a few days. We have just finished the prototype on our own exhaust system. On a 06 TL A/T it made 8whp and 7 ft lbs of tq and that was a resonated setup. We are going to try to bring in a 6 spd and see what the non-resonated setup will make. I will have a thread up by Monday with video, sound clips, and pictures.

WOW! Another exhaust for the TL. Way to go Excelerate. I can't wait to see it. BTW, I love the slotted/drilled rotors and brake pads you sold me last week. So sweet!

Wow, awesome. I had no idea you guys were making this. Another option for us people sitting on the fence about exhausts...

If you wanted a clean sound without the price tag do the stage 1 mod, solely removing the mid muffler and swapping the mufflers from the y pipe back with 2.25" tubing in order to get better flow from an exhaust junky

Basically, I'm running the GReddy exhaust with the stock resonator - sounds great to me, very obvious that the car has an exhaust but not annoyingly loud or ricey. Check it out - just another option. Vid and pic here:

stillhere, do you mean take the rear mufflers out completely? that sounds dangerous...

and jetblak, that sound really good, and i love the way the cans look on the back. just a little pricey. im still considering either just taking out the resonator and mid muffler, and seeing how that sounds, or taking out the mid muffler, and putting some universal cans on the back, leaving the resonator. any ideas from you guys?>

I wouldn't say take out the res AND the mid-muffler - that's gonna be really loud and raspy - I think someone in another thread tried that and put up a vid. I hear you on the price thing - I think it's $950 or something for the GReddy now and more for the Comptech. I got the GReddy from the 1st group buy for about $700 plus $75 for adding the stock res later so it wasn't much better. I think a couple members have gotten Magnaflow cans and just removed the mid-muffler and it looked and sounded OK. Maybe consider that. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing...

this coming weekend im going to austin, tx to have the work done. not many reputable places in stillwater, ok (OSU)...so im going to my friends shop in atx. i think im gunna get a couple HKS cans, and have them take out the mid muffler. i think it should sound pretty good. i just love the sound of the G35 coupe. i wish we could make our cars have that strained, high growl that they have at about 6K.

I replaced everything from the 3rd cat back. Went 2.5" through a 12 or 14" dynomax resonator, dropped to 2.25" at the Y pipe and ran it through two 11" magnaflows.

For me, the drone in the cabin was too much. The sound was also a little louder than I wanted. My 16yr old loved it.

I swapped out the dynomax with a 26" X 6" magnaflow. That toned down the drone and the volume quite a bit.

Still drones a little on the highway but not too bad.

did you run the quad magnaflows, or just some regular mufflers?

jetblack used what I recommended, using the round resonator and eliminating the oval mid muffler and swapping out the mufflers to whatever you like would give you stage 1 with upgraded mufflers, that is what I was suggesting

I used universal 4x9 oval offset/center with magnaflow 4" tips.

thats prob what ill end up doing. so i should just listen around to see what type of sound i like from the rear mufflers huh... either the low growl from the magnaflows or the high strain from some tuner cans.

If you have other TL's you can listen to with different setups, that is the best way to go.

I listened to many youtube recordings and none of them sounded like what I ended up with. And the cabin drone with the resonance just can't be duplicated without some extensive recording and playback equipment.

I had done a bit of research before I settled on my final setup, spoke to a bunch of exhaust techs, a few of which had actually worked on TLs. The consensus was that the stock resonator (the round one which is 1st from the cat) was the best to get rid of drone, and the 2nd oval mid-muffler was there to tone down the sound a bit. The drone was my biggest problem - that buzzing in the cabin was unbearable to me - so using the stock res and leaving the rest of GReddy's system straight-thru to the cans got rid of 90% of the drone but left some good sound, but that sound wasn't as nice as it was with the straight-thru GReddy pipe, so there is a trade-off. It depends on what's important to you as the owner and what you can tolerate. I have a 22" magnaflow resonator sitting in my garage - I think I'm gonna have someone fab a pipe with that res welded in to see if I like that sound any better, but I'm almost certain I'm going to re-introduce some drone...

Personally, from what I can gather from your posts, I think StillHere's suggestion is best for you. Cut out the mid-muff, leave the res, pick out some cans based on the sound you want. BTW - HKS is really ricey-sounding IMHO. The GReddy is actually very low and deep at low RPM and then gets higher pitched as you climb thru the revs. Perfect in my opinion. Magnaflow might do well, too.

what about some less expensive no name cans? jw. my friend has greddy on his 240sx and told me that the rear mufflers will really define what the sound is, but i was just wondering what yalls opinions were. i found some carbon Ti style cans, but idk how the sound would be
