cold air intake advices
cold air intake advices
I live in boston, mass and I want to get a cold air intake but I'm worried if I get it I'll screw up my engine because with the great new england weather i'll get water in my engine. Has anyone in new england or a place with rainy and snowy weather have a cold air intake that they haven't had any problems with? Its not worth it at all for me to get one if the risk of ruining my engine is so high. Any advice would help

Lots of info on the website, but I'll get you started.
I am assuming that you are looking at a complete CAI, rather than a short ram.
Unless the filter is nearly completely submerged, you won't have a problem.
If you go through a deep puddle, which you shouldn't do anyway, you might be in trouble. Heavy rains, etc., no problemo.
You can also invest in a bypass which will save you if you make the above mistake.
We have several great sponsors here on the site which encourage you to buy from them (excelerate, etc.)
I personally have the Fujita F5, and travel quite a bit, and have never had a problem in 50K+ miles.

AEM has a bypass for their CAI. You really don't need it though unless you plan to drive the car like its a submarine. I wouldn't drive through extremely deep puddles. Keep off the gas if you have to though. I live in the northeast and have had my CAI for well over a year with no problems. I know all about the bad weather and your concerns. I don't run a bypass nor do I know anyone that does.

Here is the AEM V2 for your 2005 TL. This is the intake I plan on getting and everyone who has it absolutely loves it from what I've heard.

You won't generally have a problem with water getting into the intake, regardless of what intake you choose. I suggest making your own. Saves money and performs exactly the same

Yes, it should come with complete intructions as well although I don't know how self explanatory they are. There are several DIY on this forum that will help a lot.
cant pm you yet...but yeah planning on doing it with some other guys soon.

now one question. is that a 2 piece or 1? cuz of the by pass i,m asking. i might have to get the bypass with it to cuz i live in maryland and the rain is crazy sometimes here.
I live in Miami and it POURS almost every day in the summer. I do a lot of driving in very heavy rains with no problem. I've had an AEM intake for 3 years. No special bypass valve or fancy waterproof covers. Never a problem. Just like everyone is saying, don't drive through deep puddles.
hey im pretty close to the revere line only been to the beach of it though lol never really leave my lil town. =D jus got a tl-s recently i like the AEM for performance and all but i also want a polished chome tube for the intake any good sugguestions?
I live in CT and have had a K & N CAI on my 1997 4Runner for the last 4 years and have never had a problem.
I also put a K & N Short Ram Cone Filter on my 2003 Nissan Maxima with no issues what so ever.

While you guys are formulating a response to "which is better AEM v2 or Injen" - could someone please differentiate between the AEM v1 and v2 for me?
I'm considering adding a CAI to my 07 TL-S after deciding through much reading on here that it looks safe from a DIY and warranty perspective...
But can't find anything solid on why one CAI vs. another, especially even between the AEM 1/2...
Would love to understand the differences a bit more before I get myself into this.
Thanks!

Just took my car for a drive for the first time with the cai which I just finished installing...huge difference right away in power...the car absolutly flies from takeoff...as for sound, haven't taken it on a road I can go real fast in, but got it up to 4000 rpms a few times and there's a decent differnce in sound...as for slow driving, can hear the hissing of the intake pretty well...as for hydrolock, the filter sits aboiut half a foot above the ground and protected pretty well by the drivers side wheel and front bumper, so not too concerned at this point...will post pics when I'm able too which should hopefully be tomorrow
I did mine myself yesterday...I'm fairly good with cars but not a mechanic. I thought it was pretty hard, it took me about 2 1/2 hours start to finish...hardest part is removing the oem intake and the airbox and everything...aem provided pretty detailed instructions for installing the cai...if you are good at following directions and have little car knowledge you should be ok

Now to some people, that may not bother them.
So now I take a good look at the construction thickness of the pipe itself, and the filtering qualities of the filter (since I want my baby to last, and injesting dirty, poorly filtered air will not help).
I have installed a "raincoat" on my Fujita, which acts as a prefilter without restricting airflow.

Each mfr. believing that his CAI will produce more hp/torque than the other.
Some have dyno readings, but the accuracy and test conditions are subject to scrutiny.
Whether it's 5 hp, or 10 hp.....you really won't feel it in your ass.
You want the best bang for your buck. Knowing that you really can't tell the difference at 295hp, or 5 hp more at 300hp on your butt dyno

Just a thought but if you have a buddy that is military or retired military with a Military ID, Pep boys gives a 10%. Hehe...still nearly $270!!
I've been looking at clips on youtube.com on different brands of CAIs on 04-08 TL's.....WOW!!!
