if i wanted to though, i could hypothetically get an AEM cone filter and just use that instead of the k&n though right? and could anyone explain the difference to me? is there any benefit to using an oiled filter versus using a dry one?

The dry filters are just less maintenance,
The typical DRY high-performance drop in air filter is able to trap slightly more contaminates (99%) due to the smaller micron size of the cotton gauze material used, but this also restricts the overall FLOW rate of the filter. The cfm (cubic feet of air per minute) is less than oiled filters of the same size.
The typical OILED high-performance drop in air filter is able trap slightly less contaminates (98%) due to a larger micron size size of the cotton gauze material used, and this improves the overall FLOW rate of the filter. The cfm is more than the dry filter of the same size.
Four other important notes:
1) The oiled filters can afford to have a slightly larger micron size, because the oil on the surface of the cotton gauze material acts as 'sticky trap' for a lot of the dust. It will not allow it to pass through the filter element. So overall it's the better choice all things considered.
2) Oiled filters can also add more layers of cotton gauze filter material without restricting the flow rate like a dry cotton gauze filter would.
3) Any one of the two filters above, will trounce the performance of the paper OE air filter that comes from the factory. (while retaining almost the same filtration percentage.

Think that big hunk of aluminum tubing might tend to heat soak under the hood after the car warms up?

thank you, I think I will just use the K & N for now since it's free.
Do you know how long the intervals are between oiling it?
And aren't the AEM and Injen and other intakes also made of aluminum?

Whatever, the filters are gauranteed for a Million friggin miles and you really can't "over" oil them. I soak mine in the sink to clean it then re-oil it and it's good to go.
Op- its bent aluminum tube with a filter, so just buy it. No need to get into the weeds comparing them to ones that cost 3x that and are the exact same thing.

I came into this thread expecting people to bash the intake, and was pleasantly surprised to see that people understand a CAI is a CAI, you dont need to spend $400 to gain 4hp.

I was looking through ebay and I found the exact same thing for $38.99
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/04-08...#ht_3178wt_802
Is this still legit? Or should I just buy the DC sports one for $122 shipped?

The last eBay post was the intake without the K&N filter, so i spent the extra 27 dollars to get the K&N. i will probably use it until it is time for a new filter, and after that i might invest in a newer dry one. I understood that intakes are just aluminum which is why i was going to be satisfied buying this, but i just wanted to make sure that this listing included everything i need and thanks again for all of your help everyone. I made the K&N purchase and I'm sure it will turn out to be amazing. Once again, thanks again for all of your help for this post, and all the other great information on these forums, I check them almost every day lol

The eBay one looks great for the price.

Indeed-- the air remains in the last 36" of the tube for nearly 50 milliseconds-- and the only air that actually contacts the tube is the layer of molecules around the surface-- but there IS some heat gain. Sort of like pissing is the Pacific ocean will also increase the temperature of the ocean..

I'd stay away from ultrarev in terms of customer service. I had a bad experience when I ordered my CAI, and ultimately cancelled my order after waiting indefinitely for it to arrive even after being assured it would be sent soon. Do a search, there's an on goin thread about their CAI and the customer service complications.

I remember over at the club rsx forums this stupid moderator K20A2, literally doesn't know what he was talking about, suggesting that a couple hundred dollar intake TUBE such as injen will perform BETTER. In reality they do the same as an ebay intake. This is talking about just the tube, yes quality may not be great but look at what your paying, not too bad if you ask me. Bottom line, the tube inlet and piping size is the same in most cases compared to the expensive intakes, it's the filter that matters. Keep us updated on how it performs!

im picking up one of these for my tl-s today with the k&n filter. i thought the seller name on ebay looked familiar so i hit up my homie that works at an auto warehouse and what do you know? its the same place! haha. im thinking of putting some sort of exhaust wrap around the intake to keep it cool ?

Just make sure to slap a carb sticker on that thing depending on the laws in your state!
Otherwise, its just as good. If I took off my aem sticker on my cai it'd look just like that.

the home depot wrapping looks like crap.( imo)..Why dont you get thermotec
wrap for headers( another brand is DEI..does same thing-) and doesnt look half as bad.. the thermotec stuff comes in light or dark gray.

I just installed this intake last night...it seemed to be almost as good as any other name brand intake i have used in the past. There were no instructions though they weren't really needed except that there wasn't a really good way to mount the bracket up with what was provided. I ended up just fabricating a bracket and it works so I'm very happy with it...quick shipping too.
