Cheap Intake - Ebay
#45
I decided that i didn't really want to pay money for whats essentially a piece of pipe with a name brand sticker on it. I ended up just removing the resonator and dropped in a high flow k&n filter. The intake now sits right under the battery, So basically a cai, without the pipe, and it sounds almost identical to a real cai..........Just doesn't look that sexy when you pop the hood. Total spent 45 for the filter, and about an hour of elbow grease.

thats the vibration mount. i placed it where the OP put his custom bracket. mine didnt come with nuts though, looked all over the garage and found some

Glad to see most people here understand that a CAI is the same regardless of whether or not it has a name brand sticker.
I've bought cheap intakes like these for years and I spray them with "rubberized under coating" which is cheap and available at the parts store. I put some painters tape on the ends where the coupler will be (so I can peel back the rubber from that area when I'm done) and give it 4-5 coats for a nice rubber layer. Works beautifully to keep heat away, and even looks like a stock piece!
I've never used plasti-dip but that might be a good alternative as well.
Here's the stuff I get:

Here's another, closer shot. Apparently I was using this image to show someone exactly where my new SS clutch line was going...
Anyway, you can see the texture of the rubber undercoating a little clearer.
(oh, and yes that's a JDM B20A 160hp FTW!)

i was just curious because in reviews on az (i'mstillhere) he says that a difference between aem v1 and v2 is that v2 doesn't have the whistling. just curious if anyone had a video of the whistling from this much cheaper intake even though they perform similar
#64
I've never heard a whistling sound from a CAI, but I have heard a raspy-gasping sound at idle from every CAI regardless of brand. Usually you won't notice it unless you lean your head down to the fender where the filter is. The sound is more obvious with short ram intakes.

How are the intakes holding up? Thinking of ordering this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ACURA-RL-TL-...#ht_4076wt_956
Would I need a K&N filter with that intake or just use the filter that it comes with? How are you guys custom fabricating the "mount", can anyone explain that in more detail? For the rubberized coating or whatever everyone was talking about...why not use plastidip? It will provide the rubberized coating and it will look nicer.

Why not just get this one that comes with K&N filter? I used plasti dip to coat mine and it does look better. As for the mount, I just taped it on.

i think i will jump on this too.. doesnt the filter alone cost like 40 so for 65 for whole kit is great.
how much water does it take to be risk.. does the car need to be submerged or something? if drive in rain and hit a few puddles will that put me at risk?

The only difference that I can see between the brand name and the ebay one is that the ebay intake tube does not appear to be mandrel bent. This would restrict some air flow through the bend. I have not seen one in person, just going by pictures I have seen, so I could be wrong.

Keep in mind plasti-dip is very thin (unless you use 20+ layers) and therefore doesn't provide much in the way of insulation. It's definitely better than no insulation, but not nearly as good as rubber undercoating. Just weight the options of better insulation (and colder charge) vs better looks. Either option is better than nothing at all. Personally, I don't think plasti-dip looks any better, but that's just me
For water to be a serious concern, you would have to drive through a lake. Or, your splash guard would have to be missing. As long as the splash guard is in place and there's no direct path that water can take to the filter, you'll be fine. Water detonation is exceedingly rare and would only happen if you literally submerged the filter (assuming it was properly guarded).

^ classic newb mistake. But ultimately, everyone should get whatever makes them happy. For a lot of people, impressing others with brand name stickers is most important, so for them, the premium is worth it, even if there isn't a performance difference.

Anybody have an experience with this seller? It's the only non-name brand one I can find on eBay, I'm not gonna pay $200+ for a sticker when there's decent ones for $100 or less. They have CAI, SRI, cheapie filter or K&N or AEM.

The ebay seller I got it from has that too, it's $55 instead of $75, IMHO get the $75 one cause you can just use the first pipe to make an SRI but also have the option of a CAI for $20 more. Unless you make an air box for it though the SRI will suck in more hot air than stock and not increase performance.
