B-031: Intake Review Part II (A look at the AEM v2)
v1... Those of you who read my Fujita vs AEM thread know how I feel about the AEM over the fujita.. AEM won that match hands down
Now its time to compare the v2 to my v1
AEM v2 (Accord 03-07)
Filter: 4" Diameter (dryflow)... Provides more options because we all know the fujita filter is top knotch, but there are other filter options mainly from k&n since they make a couple 4"x6" filters
Tube: attached to the Throttle Body by a hose, 3" diamter at the throttle body (same size as fujita at the throttle body) for near same size as Throttle Body. The widest section of the tube is 4" and finishes off with a vibramount attached to the same spot as fujita (will not attach if you have p2r spacer will require a custom little aluminum extension)... Here is where the plot thickens, 3/4 of the tube is 3" diameter, and 1/2 the tube is 4" dimater.. Doesn't make sense right??? Well its because the 3" section drops way down into the 4" section concluding with the massive 4" filter.
Quality: I guess here is where the price difference is justified... Not sooo fast.. the aluminum maybe thicker than v1.. But @ $250 to $400... The price just cannot be justified. I got mine new for cost (so no complaints about price my way )
Fitment: No lie, it wasn't made for this car ... It is a very very very tight fit, I am actually going to hammer a little at the inside of the fender (the area just behind the battery) to widen the opening, there is maybe couple a mm between the ram and the chassis... Couple hammer hits will round it out so there's more space (just keep this in mind for you guys who are intake shopping and would like to do this mod it is not a 100% fit, I'd give it a 90% fitment). The sensor CANNOT be relocated with the v2 because the sensor slot is simply 3" too far away hehehe even without the p2r spacer (soooo no iat relocation with the v2), the vaccum hose is farther aswell so you'll be using all of the hoses provided in the box.
Performance Review
YES... What you guys have been waiting for
At idle, sounds stock, when you turn the car off you get that audible air release (common with intake upgrades)
Not that it is recommended but since you guys do it anyway, I will provide info on it: if you rev the car while in park, sexy friggin sound, it is definitely louder than the aem v1...
WOT: Let's just say there is definitely a low end kick between shifts, that small tiny rpm drop between shifts allows for an air buildup in that chamber of sorts, and that stored air is sucked in, the function of the v1 and v2 I suspect is the same once you get up to top end. Regardless the v1 never threw me back into the driver seat, the v2 does the pickup in power is really noticeable, I give the V2 a thumbsup for low end and a hell yea for midrange, and nothing for top end since its identical to v1 uptop...
Sounds: The chambered design yields a highly audible intake sound in the vtec range (sooo loud it put a smile on my face)
Dyno #'s: They mean almost nothing and I can furnish them if there is enough request.. As of now only Rodney is down, anyone else
Worth the upgrade from v1 to v2... NO.... Not unless you get the v2 for cheap.. Would I suggest new aem intake shoppers to go for v2 yes... But not worth it to go from v1 to v2

Well not the fender persay... Its a section that's behind the fender I'll post pics when I do it... The 4" diameter is very bulky, I rather do this than expose the tube to the metal and create a hole (again) heheh

Great write up. Definitely will be considering the V2 now.
You mentioned an audible air release when you turn the car off, I actually get that air release now and I have the stock air box..??

Al, whats your take on the difference finishes for V1 and V2? I have the polished V1 and it gets hot as fukk. Do the other ones get as hot? Also, is there a way to coat it in something so the heat won't build up as much? Maybe I'll weld some fins on (heat sinks) for better heat dissapation.

Honestly they all get hot... Only the stock intake was heat free because plastic doesn't retain the heat as aluminum does...
The only thing you can do is get an intake heat wrap from dei or from a few other thermal race products out there and wrap the tubing in it... Ultimately ur intake will look like a space suit hehheh... And honestly you won't gain from this much... Unless u track the car, the heat from everyday driving isn't gonna hurt unless you really push the car when its 80+

Sweet nice writeup!
The V2 definetely looks sick... too bad I already have V1.
I think I know what you mean about hammering the inside fender-area. I did that for one of the areas in my rear-bumper because it portion of it wasn't sticking out flush with the taillights.
As of the dyno, if there are enough interest on that.. I'll help with a donation for dyno costs. =]

Well I "did" have. Then I put it back to stock and sold it.
I know I was just busting your balls. And your right. 500hp is nothing on the K20.
But Mine started everyday, and was a DD. (Maybe there is something to be said for that.)

My TL has the regular AEM CAI, must I remove the whole bumper just to clean the filter? I didn't install it, so otherwise I would know! I was thinking I could just remove the right front tire, unscrew the splash guard and possibly get to it that way? Removing the bumper by myself seems like a pain. I have a 04 Model. I can't compare to a V2, but I did have one in my Rsx-S, that thing was loud =D

not at all. it is not necessary to ever remove the bumper for the regular AEM install. it just makes things easier, but thats really just for the stock intake removal. your plan to change/clean the filter will work just fine

4 plastic tabs 1 underneath and 3 on the fender liner (one is on the side) and lastly 2 10mm under the bumper driver side and you can peel back the fender liner, you'll have perfect access to the filter clamp

I know it's been discussed before, but can't find the info with search not working properly. How often does the filter need cleaned/changed with the AEM (regular or V2) CAI set-up?
