Automatic Transmission Mods?

I'm curious if there is any modification available for the Automatic transmission'd 3G TL.

Is anyone aware of a shift kit or any performance enhancing transmission parts or modifications out there?

I've heard a bit about changing out the stock fluid for aftermarket fluid, but is there anything else that will improve the performance and smoothness of the auto's?

Also, this may sound stupid, but is there any way to modify the actual shifter for the auto? I know short shifters are a popular mod for the manuals, but is there anything similar for the auto? Anyway to shorten the shifter at all? I like the stock knob, but I'd like some sort of aftermarket feel to it.

Thanks for any constructive comments!

The best bang for your buck tranny mod would be changing the fluid to syn oil like Amsoil Univ. ATF, with that you get firmer shifts and cooler running tranny which should extend it's life. Changing the fluid more often should help too if you are driving in mostly stop and go traffic where tranny gets very hot and fluid breaks down faster. Forget everything else, not worth it with this car in my opinion!

I heard getting an aftermarket grounding kit takes the delay out of the shifts in SS mode....donno how much truth there is to that though.

doesn't sound like the grounding kit will hlep much with delayed shifting...its not a voltage problem...its just delayed...i think audi has the fastest Sport Shifting response

External transmission cooler. I can't believe a car like ours does not have one. It won't help the performance but it will greatly extend the life.

I'm not sure why you would want a sport shifter in an auto. It's about as good as it gets stock. Bump it up or down, it's just a switch and there's hardly any movement in manual mode it's not like the shifter is actually connected to the trans in sport mode.

the tl's use a tranny warmer....little hockey puck thing under the intake tube....warms up the tranny fluid faster using coolant....but i dont think we have a factory tranny cooler....i think thats a good investment....might have to do that one myself too

It's actually a tranny cooler/warmer. It attempts to stabilize the tranny fluid to a normal operating temp.

The device is too undersized in my opinion and cars can benefit from an external cooler on spirited driving or high ambient temps.

07WDP,

I'm a new comer to the acurazine community. But if you were looking for performance such as matching your torque to hp. Talk with Mike at levelten.com. They have over 30 years in the AT business. I've talked to him personally for my 94 accord w/95 H22A. When I get back from Iraq, I will be buying thier Stage 3. He has assured me that thier tranny's can take upwards of 800-900hp putting out 1,000 ftlbs of torque. You just have to let him know what you have and what you want. They're based out of Jersey. They are strictly Automatic Transmissions from what I know. Mild to wild, it all depends on what you want and what you can afford. Don't get me wrong they're not cheap. But well worth the money

Has anyone flushed their AT with Synthetic, or do you guy just go to a Honda Dealer and use their recommended fluid?

I did. I just pumped out fluid through the tranny cooler lines until I got pure fresh fluid. It took around 10-12 qts.

Yes, I use Mobil1 synthetic ATF. I did the three flushes with 3 quarts. Now, I do a 3-quart flush each time I do an engine oil change (every 3000 miles).

The Mobil1 ATF does change how the TL shifts. Much more snappy shifts. Just the way I like it. I never did like how the oem trans shifted.. too soft.

I guess the Auto Type S has the added torque to throw you back... cuz when I feel like having a led foot 3rd to 4th gives me memories of my old b16 vtec... the engine revs are beatutiful sounding

I am assuming that it goes into gear quicker and it shifts quicker when you manually shift?
When I go from Reverse to Drive, it might take about 1-2 seconds before the tranny engages, is this just the way the tranny is set up. I am getting ready to do a complete synthetic swap. I think the local shop is recommending Amsoil or RedLine, I think either will be fine/better than oem.
Thanks for your inputs.

Remember the engine rev matches your shifts which will also cause a slight delay.

i found a nice mod....i bought a 6mt...lol..but i think using anything else besides Honda ATF is overkill....i still flush my AT every 10k miles....as long as you do the flush every 15K you should be just fine....

The computer controls the shift solenoids. Therefore, the shifts still have the delay. It is not like an old fashion trans where the shift quality and shift speed was controlled by the oil pressure acting against springs in the valve body. Instead, the TL uses computer-controlled solenoids that act directly on the clutch packs.

Although the delay is still the same when using Mobil1 Syn, the shifts are much firmer when the shift does occur. Both the upshifts and downshifts hit slightly harder. I love it.

Yeah, I almost pulled the trigger on a 6sp in AZ with a supercharger, but it hiccuped inbetween boost/vacuum. I guess that's the way CompTech set it up. Anyway, there were zero A-Spec's on the market, so when I was in Vegas two months ago, I stubbled upon an A-spec with a Ron Jon body kit. The car is player, but it's an automatic. In Southern Cali, there are a ton of hills, so I don't mind the auto, but I just wish that when I put it in gear or I upshifted, that the tranny would do what it's suppose to, not wait .5 or 1 second. I also wish the car was rear wheel drive, but you can't have everything.
