Auto is geared too tall!

This car is pretty cool, but the gears seem very tall and spaced apart. It could be so much quicker! Does anyone make a lower geared diff? Might as well get limited slip if it's available. How much and how much to install?

5AT is geared w/ double overdrive, and only three accelerating gears .. the 3rd gear is your highway passing gear, so 1st and 2nd are your two accelerating gears. The car's auto tranny, like most traditional automatics, is designed for fuel efficiency. However, the first three gears of the 5AT are generally a little shorter than most first three gears of a traditional 4AT.

plus i'm sure it has a little to do with power right? i agree the car is a little more sluggish than I had hoped w/ 270hp. engine really works hard to get you going. it never seemed like that w/ my gs400 auto. but that was a v8.

i have looked at this alittle and here's some info... the fourth gear from the honda oddessey is much shorter going from something like .620 on the TL to .768 ...the ridgeline i think it is has a final of like 4.6 from the TL 4.4 ...throw a stall on it and a phantom grip and this could be a nice little auto...

if you can keep it together

Ya...I also have a GS400 and I can tell you that it will NEVER be that fast (as the GS) without a supercharger. No substitute for cubic inches man! Plus...the trans on the GS works greatly different than that of the TL. The GS has a VERY LOW first gear that gets you up and hopping REAL quick. Almost a feeling of a stall converter the way it works. I try not to drive it much or I would prob never get back into my TL. I like to drive the fastest thing I have available....so my challenge has seemed to be making the TL comparable...which to date....hasnt happened. Right now the woman drives the GS400....

i can tell you it doesnt take the SC to make the TL quick but i dont dissagree with the replacement for displacement...alittle stroke goes along way...think your G can go 13.30 at 106 or pull a 1.9 60' on street tires?

Actually, the automatic has a VERY low differential gear. The manual TL, on the other hand, has a pretty high final drive. The difference is, as you mentioned, the "spacing" of the gear ratios in the transmission. With the manual, once you are passed 1st gear, 2nd through 6th gears are of the close ratio variety.

BTW, the final drive of the automatic is 4.428:1 while the manual gets a 3.285:1. As you can see, the automatic is quite low (or short).

I seriously doubt that it would...I truely rarely drive it anymore as it is now been taken over by my fiancee...who really does not like me to drive it whatsoever anymore as I wrecked the shit out of it one time. Spun out and took the whole undercarriage out from under it. Broke a rim, snapped a rotor in half, axel, ect ect. It was all VERY rebuildable...but expensive as all get out. They just took everything out from under it and replaced it with new...so I got a new suspension...well..pretty much everything including diff. SO...following that incident...she cringes every time I get into it, even though technically I own both cars. Ya....I duped it pretty bad that week I was driving it. It was following a 48 hour awake period when I drove out of town for business trip...drove there....did the meeting...drove home...never slept..went to work next morning....then wrecked that evening. I probably shouldnt have been driving anyway...but I had some business I need to take care of. Anyway...for a stocker L-Tuned GS400...it does admittantly go faster than my TL..modded. The GS is lighter than the TL too.

Nah...my guess is the GS would prob come in about 14.3 sec @ around 100 or so. Prob about 5 secs 0-60 I am sure. BUT...it is pretty much stock too? And even after a good spin into the curb...the doors still close like a frigidaire? Cant complain!

the gs was great. i had to give it up since it was a lease. just too much $$. I went for the TL and I'm happy with the adjustment. saving bundles!! and no lease!!

it was too bad I had to give it up. I had lots of plans for that car. still might get one in a year or two as a project car. it never gave me any problems and god forbid I have to take it to the dealer, i was treated like royalty w/ anything I could possibly want, all complimentary. And that V8 just never stopped pulling. I smoked countless stangs and modded imports who thought they were Wicked car!
