How did you move the pistons in before removing the pads?

Also, what's the difference between steps 1/2 and step 3? Are you beating on Allen key with a hammer? What are you using the screwdriver for?

I want to apologize for awakening this thread from the dead but i'm juist tired of searching and searching and hoping I can have a few members chime in. I plan on installing my Hawk Pads (Currently have 23K) I'm aware of the bed-in procedure etc but my question lies with the rotors. My rotors appear to be fine and I'm hoping in just changing out the pads and in the spring will replace with slotted/drilled rotors. Can I just install these pads and then follow the bed-in procedures and be done or is it absolutely mandatory that I have the rotors professionally refinished/turned? I've also been told I could just sand the rotors with 30 grit sandpaper and that is fine but I'm just worried about doing that and screwing up the rotors in some well. I look forward to hearing what some of you guys have to say on this topic. I'm just acting for personal opinions and don't want any members to get in an agrument over whose procedure is the "right way" as I've seen become the case in a few other brake related topics.

Thanks in advance guys!

I just did the drop in, the rotors were OK not great. That was 20K ago so all is fine they do make the tell-tale squeak but I really think that is the stock pads have a huge chamber that minimizes the squeak but also reduces the contact area enough where I would go with the hawks still. I don't participate that much on the forum because I found a lot of know it alls who spend too much time posting crap when they are clueless.

There a links to a couple more brake DIY's iwht pics here: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/3g-tl-garage-faq-3g-tl-newbies-553554/

Basically, you can either:

1.) take a large flat head screwdriver and with the old pad still in place, lever against the old pad to push the piston in, or

2.) remove the old pad, insert a block of wood and use something like a C-Clamp to depress the pistons.

Do NOT push on the pistons directly - use something in between to depress both together.

The pistons push in pretty easily. Do it with even pressure across both pistons, nice and slow/smooth.

Sorry for bringing up an old tread. I have a question on the hawk hps brake pads. Do I take off the shims that came with the hawk pads and re use the old brembo shims? Or do I just put the brembo shims behind the hawk pad shims??

Thanks, Sam

Putting this is here for anyone who has the same question.

Resetting the pistons.

I dont have that tool that reset both pistons at the same time and I have a way of resetting them all at the same time without the need to go buy any special tools.

When you have the pads to where they are about to be remove, take your HANDS and pull the pad on the outside towards you just a little bit to the point where you can fit the head of a flat head screw driver in there, then on the opposing side push away until you again can fit a flat head screw driver in there. Since this is a hydraulic system you are now going to have to do both sides at the same time. Take your screw drivers and slowly push against the pads CAREFULLY. Continue to do this until the pistons are completely reset on all four locations. Thats it. Hope this helps someone else who is not a mechanical mastermind much like myself.

Thanks for the write up, I was already about to take my calipers completely apart thinking that was the correct way to change out the pads.
