08 MT TL Type S New Dyno Results
Well boys and girls:
I have been absent for quite a while. I went to my buddy's dynojet @ Orlando to do a couple of runs. The car stock ran on the first pull an impressive 253.45whp 229.21tq. Later that day we installed the AEM CAI and the ATLP J-Pipe with the 3rd cat delete with a stock cat back...Obiously the cat back was stock so the numbers were not that different. It ran a 264.32whp 237.72tq. I was pretty happy with the numbers anyways.
During all this time I have been reading the different posts on new parts etc for the Type S...A year later I installed the xlr8 cat back from some other guy in Miami that was selling his TL. It was a pretty damn good bargain although the fabrication had one small defect on the joint between the third cat and the cat back itself. It was fixed quickly. The car was never dynoned until today.
As of today I am yet to claim the most powerful TL bolt on. I have purchased the RV6 pre-cat deletes and the TB spacer with both heat shield gaskets for the throttle body and the intake manifold heat shield gasket as well. The first run with the catback now and the pre-cat deletes and intake manifold gasket was 288whp/256tq. The second run we installed the TB spacer with the throttle body gaskets and ran 290.63whp/262.65tq.
This forum may serve as a confirmation of sketchy information about the TB spacer. It is true that only 2whp is within the range of error of a dyno, but on the other hand there was a 6lbs of increased tq, as a result the spacer does provide some kind of power.
The tests were conducted at 82F degrees with 50% of oil life on the car. By the way, I do not have the UR pulley which in my opinion it only helps the car in developing quicker rpms and not power. I am very satisfied with the numbers, since I carefully calculated back and forth each car that all of you have and I was right on the money. The only thing is that I was not expecting sooo much torque.
There was an Automatic TL Type S from BLACKURA running a while ago 293whp/233tq. Yes he did 3 more horses than me at a temperature of 66F degrees (14 degrees of difference with pulley as well). If the temp was slightly cooler and the oil change was conducted, my car should be at about 295whp. Not to mention that there is a confirmed big ass difference between Automatic and Manual transmission...Auto 233tq vs mine Manual of 262.65tq
I hope this serves for all of those performance enthuiastic people out there to learn a little bit more about big differences between Auto vs Manual, the question wether the TB Spacer works or not and a couple of degrees of ambient temp might have an impact on your car.
Soon we will go to the race track...I have never taken the car to the 1/4 mile drag strip, but with these numbers...The car should be running about a 13.5 secs. Thank you to Josh from Excelerate for the catback, gaskets and spacer. Big thanks to ATLP for jpipe and race pipe. And hands down to Richie for the pre-cat deletes (most bolt-on gains for your money) besides his discount for my service here in Afghanistan as we speak.

By the way my first runs were back in July 08...And the 290whp was today 30-Oct-2010...

Actually Stillerhere had a black Acura TL type-S with 300+ to the wheels NA. He had lightweight wheels along with a single outlet 3" exhaust. He had the 5spd auto transmission.

I recall "StillHere" having some 300whp...Then again its Auto so whats its torque too?Not to mention auto transmission give some additional weight to the car as well...Is there any way to retrieve his final numbers? Just to have a comparison? Like I said...maybe i've we did the dyno runs on the evening or maybe closer to winter time and did my oil change; I can expect a 5whp for sure...I have all ready ordered a pair of Nitto Drag radial tires...On this FWD cars its all about your first 60ft on the drag strip. These tires should do the work to achieve the 13.5 mark that I am looking for.
Hey does anyone know how can I post attachements? On my posting rules I am not allowed. I really want to post dyno graphs, pics and the video clip of the dyno run. Also for a near future some time slips from the track.
I agree with everyone is kinda frustrating not to see time slips of TL's out there or not to many videos of TL's on youtube running the 1/4 mile beating some G37's or something like that LOL.

I have 2 videos that I would like to show or post...Or you can search me on facebook too to see them...One is on the dyno and the other is the TL doing a quick pass on the street 1st and 2nd gear before running out of road hahaha...The sound is a lot louder with the pre cat deletes...But the numbers are insane...What can I do to post graphs, videos and pics?

I don't know what his torque numbers were but a NA auto TL making 300+ hp the wheels is very impressive. He has to make nearly 10% more power to deliver the same hp to the wheels as the manual. Don't worry about the torque too much, the slip of the torque convertor can throw the dyno off sometimes.
You put down some impressive numbers but changing the oil will give you 0 hp. The spacer likely showed a little more power due to the cool down time to install it.

I agree to an extent...a 20 min (time that took to put the spacer with tb gaskets) cool down is cutting it close to gain almost 3whp and almost 7tq for that spacer...Regarding oil change you might be right...Still it was at 82F compare to other numbers slightly higher for 15 degrees of cooler ambient temp such as BLACKURA .
Regarding the slip on tq convertor hmmm well...it does have a margin of error but not when there is 30lbs of difference in tq..I mean that is a big gap...A 300whp AT Type S compare to MT 290whp...its a good race...just for weight alone MT will come on top

Next time you dyno, check out the air density if the dyno does not already correct for it. This will tell you how much room or improvement you have. You could have a car make more power at 95 degrees at sealevel vs one at 65 degrees 1,500' in elevation. I've thought about dynoing mine this winter at the same dyno because my last one was on a 100 degree day..

Nice numbers. Car sounds awesome too. I put down your stock numbers (20 less tq) with my full bolt on J30 ugh lol. Definitely get to the track asap!

Hey...Quick question...
The check engine light has illuminated with the installment of the pre-cat deletes...Anyone knows how to get rid of that?...Thanks For the reply too "Sonnick"

Good numbers, I need to take my Type S 6MT to the dyno. I have the ATLP J-Pipe, test pipe and full exhaust with an Injen Intake. I wonder what kind of #'s I can produce.....

Edit...ok I'm assuming you're referring to Stillhere and Blackura's 5AT's. Yeah, their numbers were high, but baseline is still 240 ish, not 220.

Any word on resolving the problem with the Check Engine Light...Well those 300whp on a Automatic Transmission with a 3' exhaust sounds to me like a forced induction setup. 3' exhaust on a Naturally Aspirated engine for the TL is way too big...Anyways Blackura's numbers are 293whp...only 3 more hp than mine at almost 15 degrees cooler ambient temp. Lets way and see now in December when Florida goes down to 60F...Expected 295whp...At this point I am concentrating in 2 things...First get rid of the CEL...And second of all find the perfect tire for the car to go to the race track.
We are always talking about dyno's and whp...But there are not too many videos out there on the drag strip. Hopefully we will have a good pass of 13.5 secs or less.

These numbers still confuse me because if these 3,600lb cars are truly making 270-290whp then they should easily be getting 105mph traps. Elapsed time gets screwed up by bad 60 foots and bad driving, but you really can't screw up MPH. MPH equals HP. The reason I bring this up is that there have been at least three TLS with various levels of modification that have run at the strip and I don't think a single one has done better than low 14s and 98-101mph. Either these dynos are a bit optimistic or these cars weigh 4,000lbs

Could be both. Mine weighs 3,920lbs with me in it. I'm 220lbs. On tire, there have been a couple hit low 13s in NA form with ok mph. I remember from the old days, many ellis dynoing 290-300whp and trapping 105-7mph so the TL is on the low side. Maybe torque has a larger effect than we realize.

+1 on that. Torque does have a huge affect when the powerband is nice and fat. A 500whp/500wtq 3,500lb car will always be faster than a 500whp/300wtq 3,500lb car. The reason being the 500whp/500wtq motor will have sustainally more power under the curve. Car 1 gets it's power for big displacment or forced induction (ie think Viper motor or BMW's N54 twin turbo motor). Car 2 gets it's power from high RPM therefore it's torque production sucks (ie think S2000). Caroll Shelby always said torque is what win races which isn't true. If that was case, we'd all be seeking out turbo diesels for the motor of choice. What he really meant to say was power under the curve is what wins races.
