XM reception problems - fine one day, lost it the next
So I've had my '06 TL since October '06. I've always listened to XM exclusively and have been VERY happy with the reception, compared to the XM I added to my '04 MDX.
Anyway, reception has been near perfect since October. Yesterday, I washed the car (And then it poured, of course.) Since then - reception is absolutely horrendous! I can't even listen to XM anymore as it's out of signal 90% of the time. Could the water have caused a problem?
Has anyone had the "antenna" on the roof off (Or at least what appears to be a cover?) Or does it have to be removed by dropping the headliner or something? I was hoping to open it up and take a peek to see if something got loose or what. I know its under warranty, but I'd prefer fixing it myself instead of letting the dealer make it worse.
And yes, it is worth it to me to get fixed (especially under warranty) - I like XM and don't need to get into a war over sound quality or anything!

Well, scatch that. Finally found something after Googling for a while tonight before even typing my question -
http://www.xmradio.com/notices/signaldeg.xmc
Looks like something happened today - lots of rumors, but nothing concrete.

I've got the same problem you have. Had XM for a year in my TL with excellent reception. Today on the other hand, terrible reception, in and out all day long. I was wondering if my antenna was broken or something. Thanks for posting the XM info, hopefully it is fixed soon!
I called XM today because I was getting a bad signal as well. They said they were having technical problems and were working on the situation. They had no exact time when it would be fixed they just said keep checking.

Today, every time my car passed under an overpass on the freeway, XM would lose reception. Boy, there are a lot of overpasses in the 10, 60 and 710 freeways.
On the plus side, XM says the problems will be fixed by Tuesday a.m.
WOW guys i was just about to post 1 here...... but u beat me to it. Had the car for 2 weeks EXCELLENT signal..... today wake up BAMMM no signal horrible reception i was going crazy thinking it was something i did?? well hope the rumors get fixed ASAP!!
i almost reset my xm signal through the website but thought i'd check here first. Good to know it's them and not my car, damn i was freaking out for a bit too, radio signal cutting out every 10 or 15 seconds on every station. And i listened for at least 10 minutes before i finally went back to fm. It's been awhile since i've listened to fm and man does it suck.

I was about to call the dealer myself to schedule an appointment. Glad I didn't have to!
Sounds like the NEW XM satellite they put up on the east coast took a dump and they spent yesterday trying to get new software to it and reboot. Hope they defrag it, too, or we're all screwed. Apparently they have 4 satellites now - the original two had defects and had to be replaced, but they're all still up and not being used or something. I don't know, depends who you ask.
They started by saying it would be fixed within 2 hours - that didn't happen. Then they said by the evening. No good their either. Hopefully when I get in the car this morning its better. If not, damn that terrestrial radio!

I drove already this a.m., still sucks... called my dealer to ask if they have gotten complaints and he said no, call XM. I told him about the problem but he seemed really disinterested.
That's because dealers don't give a f@ck about their customers once they sold the car.......
This morning XM was driving me nuts......but I knew it wasn't just my TL my wife and my friends were having the same issue on their cars as well......
They need to fix that $HIT ASAP or we should get a refund or a month for free.......

Got this Email this morning from XM:
- - - begin paste-in - - -
Service Degradation Alert
You may be experiencing temporary degraded performance with your XM reception at the present time. XM is aware of the issue and working diligently to resolve it as soon as possible. We anticipate full signal strength will be restored by early Tuesday morning.

I got the e-mail too, but in my view, "early" in the morning means prior to the AM rush hour, so they didn't realize their goal because mine was crapping out on my commute at 7:30.
Here is what I found yesterday. I didn't go to XMfan to confirm it.

Hah, I was just about to post a topic on having this problem. I just had the car at the dealer, so I assumed it was something that the dealer did to the car.
Where can I view the signal strength? How do I check it?
Also, does the signal buffer up? I mean, I hit a small over-pass and it is cutting out, like it does not buffer the signal at all.

Same here in Chicago. I just got an e-mail today 05-22 saying that they know about it and they have it fixed by early morning of Tuesday. Now is 8:46am and I did not go to the car yet, but I hope it is working properly now.

Still crap -
XM updated their site, slightly -
XM Service Update
As many of you know, XM customers have experienced service outages or significantly degraded service since Monday mid-morning, May 21.
We quickly identified the problem and are working hard to return to our normal levels of service. The problem occurred during the loading of software to a critical component of our satellite broadcast system, which resulted in a loss of signal from one of our satellites. We expect normal service to resume midday today (eastern daylight time).
XM apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused. For updates, please go to www.xmradio.com
In the meantime, you can enjoy many of our music channels on XM Radio Online (xmro.xmradio.com) if you are close to computer.
Again, we regret any inconvenience for not having your XM Radio service fully available.

I was laughing at the line from XM that the programming was still available online (that you could listen online)- that does us all a lot of good when we're in the car! I suspect they will have it fixed today- if they don't, they have a whole lot more complainin' goin on on their customer service lines.
Glad you guys are on top of things. I washed my TL on Sunday and started experiencing the problem driving in to work Monday a.m. I was thinking some water might have creeped in somewhere around the antenna and was affecting my reception. It did seem kind of strange I was only losing signal around trees and overpasses. Thanks for posting this information.
Glad someone mentioned this. I had the same problem yesturday driving home and this morning. I tinted my window the day before and thought it was my tint. Flipped through the service manual and couldn't figure out why the tint will affect the receiver. I was going to call my tint shop to make sure they weren't lieing. I hope once the problem is solved, my xm will be back to normal.
same problem here too, my xm was cutting out with "no signal" about 70% of the time...its kinda funny, i was on the phone with xm the day before threatening to cancel so i could re-up for the 77 deal and she couldnt do it so before i gave her any of my info (i didnt) i hungup on her. when this problem happened the next day i thought that b - - - h was messin with me because i hung up on her (even though i didnt give her any info about me or my radio id)....haha i guess it wasnt her, she got lucky...or was it?
I was actually HAPPY to hear that it was XM having the problem. I had thought it was MY car and was freaking out (sorry if that's an old saying, I'm old). I thought my radio was dying, I asked a friend at work who also has XM and he told me "yeah they're having problems". Made my day.
