XM radio...am I paying too much?

Hey guys, Times are tough, and I have been keeping a closer eye on my credit card statements recently and noticed that I am currently paying $36.63 a month for my XM subscription, and I dont even get all the channels. This seems steep to me, and I saw a thread about people who were renewing their subscriptions for $77 a year! However, those threads have been closed since 2008, so I am not sure if that is still going on.

Can you guys let me know if I am paying too much, and if so, how I can get the price down? Thanks

I pay $19.99 for 5 months. Call the cancellation department and tell them you want to cancel then call back and ask for 5 month trial deal. They wont turn you down

I JUST got a flyer after 2 years of not having the subscription, they are turning on my XM tomorrow for 2 weeks. THEN I can pay $20 for 5 months. I will likely do it.

I was paying about $50 every three months. Wasn't worth it to me anymore since I was only using maybe 4 or 5 of the channels. I also bought an mp3 player and the cassette adapter and now have hours of my favorite music to listen too. I canceled the service last week.

The deal is still going on, a co-worker just did it.

I got 3 years for $77. The girl was very nice and it took about 15 minutes of talking but I got my way finally.

Wait, you got $77 a year for 3 years? Or you got $77 for 3 years of service? If so, I would highly consider that too.

3 full years or about $25 per year. The chick was really nice and I didn't really want the service very bad so maybe it showed. I jokingly said I would take it if she could give me 3 years for the same price and she agreed. I was a little surprised but it goes to show that all of this is completely negotiable.

Yes, that is too much. :thief: :rippedoff

The most I ever paid was $10/month for a 3-year deal when the car was new. I'm currently on a $77/year deal.

They haven't been closed, just moved. Go back and read the thread carefully or just go to where the thread has been moved:

Yeah, today started the free trial. It's amazing how crappy some of the channels sound, IMO. They have soo many channels crammed in, that they had to compress the bejesus out of them all, hurting sound quality. To me, it's almost not listenable. The $77 would be worth it to me *only* if it included Stern. Most of the posts here state it will not include Howard, so I'm not interested.

ok..so after some more investigative work, the $36 was being charged to my credit card every 3 months, but still too much to be paying. I called them up and got the $77 a year deal, only $6 a month, cant go wrong with that.

How long did you have the service for before you got on the phone with them to get that deal? I never thought I'd consider paying for XM, but they automatically activated a month subscription today and I really loved it after the commute home lol

Sorry about that, I cleared it out.

I can't remember at all. That was nearly 3 years ago. If/when I renew, if I have the same luck I will post it up. I thought about it at the time but I didn't know if I woud get anyone in trouble.

I had XM for the past 3 years or so on the TL and the CTS- my wife likes her specific stations, and I mostly listened to 49 (Classic Rewind)- I now have just about all of the selections from channel 49 on my iPod (plus many others I like), and cancelled XM on the Acura. Primarily I cancelled because of increased fees and a 'royalty fee' they were adding at the time of renewal. Plus, they owed me $24 from overcharging me and weren't smart enough to know how to refund the money (based on 6 calls to XM), so that was applied to my wife's CTS's subscription (music only)- with iPhones and Pandora, I honestly don't know if they will be around in 5 years. I think many people will become more tight with money especially if there are better options for music.

Also, the original purpose of Sirius/XM was the original purpose behind cable TV- you pay a subscription fee, get excellent service, and have no commercials. Sirius/XM, like cable, generally has questionable service, increased prices, and commercials. I'm staying with the iPod.

SOooo, I have 2 XM radios (1 in my TL and 1 portable unit in my room)...I haven't really used the one in my room the past few months and the renewal bill came in (for Nov-Jan, $33 total, not bad really). So I called to cancel (using the 866 # on my bill) and simply told them that I wanted to keep the 1 in my car going, and cancel the other since I'm tired of paying for it....in a split second she offered, on her own, to extend "complimentary service" until Jan 9th on the one I wanted to cancel...so I got 2 months for free. we'll see whats up in January
