Worst experience w/ HFL

Over this past weekend, I had difficulty using the HFL - more like, it had difficulty understanding me. This is my second car w/ the same navigation system (previous 04 Accord had it) so I'm familiar with it and I didn't have these problems before in the TL.

In example: If I say 555-2345; the HFL will repeat 865-2345, 965-2345 or 552-3450 [over and over again]... I was livid. I needed to call someone and it made it very inconvenient because I couldn't get to my purse with my phone to mess with it to turn the Bluetooth off so I could use the handset. And I'm sure people that were stopped next to me thought I was either an idiot or mentally ill and talking to myself. I tried everything. No windows down or sunroof opened. Spoke softly. Spoke loudly. Spoke directly to the freaking microphone. So on and so on. Finally, after I was ready to flip out and almost at my destination (whom I needed to call before getting there) it finally understood the number - after the 20th time.

So far - this is my only complaint since I've had the TL.

had you been drinking? perhaps you were slurring...

I know what you mean, I have experienced that, too- but 98% of the time it works flawlessly.

I was cursing mine out because it would not recognize me Friday afternoon.
But after the 20th attempt it understood me.

I was on my way to drink!

My HFL doesn't like me to pause inbetween numbers! I have to say the number with a steady pace all the way through the number. I have also found myself frustrated and leaning closely to the speaker talking into it, it has never crossed my mind what I must look like doing this. People must think I have to blow into the DUI thingy to get my car started.....

HAH! LOL.
I was speaking clearly and no, I wasn't drinking at 8:30 a.m. - although, I was the night before! .

The HFL just started acting up like this; I use it frequently and hadn't noticed an issue prior to this mishap as of late. I almost contemplated calling the dealership this morning, but thought I'd check on AZ first for experiences and see what happens when I use it on the way home from work.

I find that if you say dial or call before calling out the number it works better.
I have the same problem if i hit the button and just try to say the number.

Wish you luck.

WOW, I didn 't even know you could just say the number, I always say "dial" or "call" prior to saying the number and it ALWAYS works for me, every time.

Try speaking normally/quickly - when you do it slowly, it doesn't work as well.

Mine has never missed when I dictate numbers. But, frustratingly, it seems to misunderstand me often when say CALL HOME. I call home everyday when I'm leaving work. But often, it will say DO YOU WANT TO CALL GULLIVER'S. This creates the obvious problem of not calling what I want. But it also creates a problem because Gulliver's is a pizza place in my former neighborhood and now all I can think about for dinner is their pizza.

Some days the HFL doesn't like any of the 4 or 5 names I entered to call home with. So my "work around" is to tell the Nav to "go home" and then hit the "send" button on the Nav screen and let the Nav make the call.

I have thought about adding a personal address for the 4 or 5 people I call the most, and include their phone number. That way I can have the Nav dial their number for me when the HFL is being difficult.

Well at least your HFL works. My friends TL has never understood a word he has said. His reasoning is that its because his WDP TL is racist and does not understand an Asian person. Somehow I dont think this is the case but you never know.

Well, I'm not Asian, but my Navi had a hard time with me at first, too. I had a lisp as a child, years of speech therapy, but that Navi knows I had it!! So, my suggestions are:

speak crisply, and enunciate every syllable
keep your tongue behind your teeth when saying an "s"

Seriously, my DH has a very soft voice, but no problem with the Navi.

It's all in the "s"

I would say 90% of the time my HFL understands numbers and names the first time I say them as long as I say "Call" before. The only thing it is has trouble with is when I say "Yes". I mean its not like its a complicated word, but almost every time I need to say it differently then I normally would. Any one else have this problem?

Mine is pretty cool. I'm from the south so sometimes I get lazy and revert to just plain ole southern slang. I'm surprised that it understands me and does it very well no matter how fast or slow I am speaking.

One problem I have had, however, is that every now and then it acts like it can fine my phone that has been paired with it forever. Then I have to re-pair it to get it working again. Could be the phone: Verizon Audiovox Xv6600

  • you don't have to say them all at once. you can say as few as one digit at a time and press "speak" button again to add more digit. it works when i'm driving right next to a dump truck or something.
  • if that still didn't work, for example your sunroof is open or too much whatever noise around for voice recong., you can get your phone (don't have to disable HFL/bleutooth), dial the number, press send and hang up immediately (now this number becomes your "last dialed" number). now press HFL button and say "redial". it will dial that number.
  • or you can use your phone and dial the number. after it's connected, press the HFL button and say transfer. you will be talking thru HFL. again DON'T have to disable HFL/bluetooth first.
hope this helps.

Mine works almost perfect, except the number part
This afternoon I took my boss for a drive in my new car... Well, sat in and said: "CD 1, track 5", then "Hide ATM" then "Volumn down"
My boss was obviously impressed and said this HFL is much better than his (he's driving a LS430)

Last time when I was with my friend, we had a contest to see who can make it understand 10-digits phone number the first time lol.... Guess that's the entertaining bright side of HFL

Like I said above, it's all in the "s". Every word with an "s" had a problem until I started sayng them more crisply.

I also had the "hide ATM", etc. problems at first. I finally kept the user guide in the cup holder for a few days and learned the commands. Say the action FIRST, then the rest. Navi is trying to find the action to perform, and expects to hear that first, like "play", "call", "stop", or whatever.

Schizo HFL

I haven't seen this posted (or found it by searching), but my HFL recently has an identity problem. When I try to add a new number, it says "Phonebook full". But when I request it to "List" it says "no numbers in the phonebook". That's way to schizo for me, so I took it to my dealer, who is going to replace the whole unit (when the part gets in).
