This is good news, i want to keep XM and have my ipod charged.

Please God, let it connect directly to (and control) the ipod while not disconnecting my XM. Oh yeah, let it also be compatible with the NAV.

Unfortunately, all the AUX adapters out there so far DO disable XM...

This one which will be available very soon has an iPod interface but the description makes it look like it won't control the iPod which kinda sucks!!

Again they seem to have left the TL off their list of compatible cars.

ludachrisvt,

I think it's kinda complicated because of the fact that you have to speak the alpine-bus language with the head-unit. I think that's what complicates matters... it's not just a matter of running 0<->12V signals on lines... you know what I mean? Sucks!

Yea I know it will take some embedded code but I am a computer engineer. I think I could hack it. Also, I thought this was a panasonic hu???

I agree it is quite possible and have my doubts that someone has not already done this and not posted here. The pinouts for the iPod dock connector are available online, along with the packet structure and command strings to talk to the device. (Check out ipodlinux.org for specs, etc.) I've often considered harnessing a PIC with requisite C code or the like for transaltion and timing, but haven't had the time AND inclination simultaneoiusly. I am profficient enough in C to get around well enough but my forte is electronic engineering, I'm a hardware guy. If we could get some type of collaborrative effort moving with some people working on the software side and a few oothers drafting the circuit archetecture, we might be able to make some progress. I have at my disposal oodles of test equipment, drafting software, and digital design experience -everything we might need for pressing any number of PCB's for anyone with the desire to have made. Once we have the PCB trace image, we can have as many made as we see fit. AZine groub order maybe?

Speculation; we need: An embedded MC, PIC's are cheap, stamps are easy. We also need some type of output, wether this be through the Navi-Screen-which would require another segment of hardware for simple rendering, or through an alternate display such as an LCD placed somewhere else in the vehicle. The latter is much simpler, though not desired for obvious reasons. Sourcing an informative image for the screen would not be overly difficult though matching the appearance between Navi/AC/Audio would be difficult, seamless would be almost impossible -no one wants to keep flippping a switch between Navi/Audio. BUT, there is another way possible, if we could get some info from Panasonic on the bus Arch of the protocol used to retrieve song/track info from the XM unit in the trunk, we may be able to pirate that display page of the Navi itself, as many of the audio "hacks" involve taking over the XM channel anyway. Some of you have already been poking around back there, try and think of what you have seen thus far, ideas?

The XM unit receives commands from the Navi inputs to control tuning and a number of other features over the BUS lines which have already been identified, if we could coach the PIC into translating a "HUcon_upChan" or so command into the iPod's next-track string which is already known, we are most of the way there. In turn we could send track/album titles to the NaviUnit disguised as XM related info. It can be done, and if I were Steve Jobs, I would assign a team and have it done by Friday. The final touch would be a custom menu face within the Navi software and to get rid of the XM icon on the Audio page, but that is well beyond the scdope of what we should concentrate on at this time.

I suggest anyone interested in this right now who has abilities or resources realated to begin brainstorming in your free time, jot down notes if you can and maybe we can keep this idea going. Priority 1: Phillips bus archetecture, command strings, etc. Specifically dealing with XM. Priority 2: Someone with embedded C experience willing to author or at least revise submitted code in their free time. It would be nice if we could keep this opensource, where everyone has access to developments as they happen and can chime in with ideas, corrections, improvements. Say anyone in the dev. team gets a free one minus parts, board, etc, and other members get one at cost plus say $10 for the board or a charity of choice? The possibilities are here.

Anyone have a high-freq logic analyser the could fit into their trunk?? It would be nice to sniff those bus lines during operation if we can't get a Panasonic spec sheet.

Just read Zax's post, so it's Alpine who designaates the bus? Makes sense I guess, the Navi is Alpine. Not sure how tight lippped they are about this stuff, but I bet they're not interested in helping us.

Autotoys has acknowledged the new AUX adapter is out, but I don't know if they sell it yet. They haven't confirmed that there will be a version with iPod control in the near future... I'm kinda waiting for that though.

I was looking at the Apple website today and came across this.

Is there hope for total compatibility?
