I'm not sure, but interestingly when I first dialed "611" before my 710 was activated, I got a message saying that "your phone needs to be activated, Sprint 4-5-23" (or something like that). So, for whatever reason, the phone was initially on the Sprint network.

The reason for that may be totally different.

I was told that to implement the phone number portability infrastructure a few years ago, a specific provider in an area (looks like Sprint, in your case) has "ownership" of all the phone numbers in that area. That single provider is responsible for assigning your phone number to your cell phone company. So, when you change from Verizon to another provider (say, T-Mobile), Sprint will handle the transfer again.
