Who wants a 3G Double Din Kit?
Who wants a 3G Double Din Kit?
I had a conversation with Metra about creating a double din Kit for the TL. According to Metra the interest has to be there to start a kit. The other kits mentioned are for the Mustang and Camaro. They sell for around $200.00. Personally I would pay $200.00 metra kit for a 3G TL
Here's how the conversation went:
Hi,
Will Metra ever create a double din dash kit for the 3 gen Acura TLs? Approximately 334,000 TLs have been sold for this generation (2004,2005,2006, 2007, 2008). It is making its way into the resale market now and into the tuner market.
What obstacles are keeping Metra from developing a dash kit (Double Din)?
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or assistance. I would be more than happy to assist you.
Btw, the speakers specs on your website are wrong. The back speakers are the same size as the front.
Mike C
There is not enough demand for this vehicle. The kit is going to be a Turbo2 kit (very expensive to make and sell) We can not build the kit until the requests reaches a high enough number.
I will let address the speaker size on the website. Thank you.

Billy,
Thanks for your quick response. From my experience with the TL I can tell you that a double din HU will fit into the existing radio brackets and there is plenty of depth behind the dash. The difficult piece would be fabricating the plastic piece and dealing with the round cut-outs.
How much research has gone into exploring the cost of a kit? What would you consider be a high enough number of requests? What would you consider expensive? Would the requests have to come from the retail market or the car audio installer market?
Mike C.
The requests will have to be extremely high and will come from installers and consumers. This was researched here at Metra because the lead tech's wife had a 2006. This kit will be a $200 plus kit just like our 99-3010S or the 99-5823CH designs.

Thanks for the response and understand the obstacles to creating a kit for the 3G TLs. I would not want Metra to create something that was not marketable and not up to Metra’s standards. I would like to share your thoughts with members of the online Acura Club, Acurazine. Perhaps more interest can be generated by some hard core Acura fans.
Thanks,
Mike C
If you can have ALL of the Acura people call and email often to get the demand up this will push my boss to further on our research.

I think it would be worth dealing with the issue. The only thing I hate is the loss of steering wheel controls and not using the car's factory bluetooth system. Although, i will admit some of the AVIC units seems superior and have the ability for GPS and friggin reverse camera etc.
Here's a link to the Mustang and Camaro kits that are mentioned. They seem pretty thorough and complete.

While I agree that the Acura integration is nice the technology is from 2004 and becoming outdated. I realize that someday newer phones may be unable to connect to the OEM bluetooth and the GPS will be outdated

Well if there is a way to keep stock functionality, I totally agree. The technology is WAY outdated! Plus, I don't even have NAVI. The pioneer AVIC units are gorgeous. I should have tackled this a long time ago instead of trying to make the factory headunit work.!
Ive considered replacing mine with a DD HU since my friend owns a stereo shop he could custom make me something but i dont feel like going through all that hassle to replace it especially since i have navigation. If i didnt, it would maybe be another story. I still think someone out there would or should offer something for this car.
I'm what they considered a noob. I have a 2004 TL w/o nav. Thinking about putting a aftermarket stereo can decide if i want a single-din or a double-din screen. Has anyone put a single din screen in there 3G? I wouldn't mind a dash kit. Thinking about DIY.
