Who the hell wires things like this NAV2GO

Well, I bought my car about a year and three months ago. It had the nav2go hooked up already so I bought a backup cam and Stilleto radio to hook up to it. When I took all the panels out of the trunk to expose the unit, there was a wiring mess. I said, it works, don't mess with it.

Well today the nav screen went out but I could make out an image that was moving. So I exposed the harness and this is what I found. I was so frustrated with whoever hooked this up, I took all the wires apart and soldered the harnesses back together.

The XM module wasn't mounted with all of three 10 mm screws and that was because the guy didn't leave long enough wires. What a mess. The best part is he used ford relays and never covered the hot leads so that is what grounded out the unit.

I had a scare as I thought the nave unit was fried. I got lucky and only tosted the nav2go. I am gonna hook it up in the near future with the plug and play harness.

Here is the mess I was cleaning up. Never trust anyones work. This could have been a lot worse.

Anyone know what the compact flash slot on the Alpine DVD Nav unit is for?

From the Navi diagnostic menu, you can cause GPS info to be logged to it. Apparently it's in an odd format as I've seen a couple of posts about decoding it. I've never messed with it. At least on the '06 models, it's actually a PCMCIA slot, so you'd need a PCMCIA compact flash adapter.

In the diagnostic menu, there's an implication that you can load software from the card slot. I've not seen any reference to anyone trying that.

Note: I haven't messed with this at all, I'm just passing along what I've read in other posts.

^^ Agreed, nothing wrong with the ford relays. It's how the installer mounted it to the car and had the hot leads exposed causing it to hit the metal on the car and short out.

TL/GTX- Are you ok up there??? Sometimes I wonder....

GEESH!!! WTF! Messy wiring is my pet peeve!! That can be dangerous, I learned a few burnt wiring lessons myself when I was in high school with my first car. I do my work clean now.

Good thing you are going to redo everything the right way and save your self a $2k nav system....or worse, a fire in your trunk!

Yes those are the resistors I put in for the led blinkers. They are in far enough not to make contact with the trunk liner.

You and me both man. The relay setup with the exposed hots about an inch from the cars body was an accident waiting to happen. Some people need to be shot when they do shit like this. I was so pissed off, I just took it all out. I am going to order another nav2go and the plug and play harness and do it right.

I felt like a doctor in the trunk of my car solderig the leads back togther in the oem harness.
