Where is the mileage information stored on our cars?
Any tech know exactly where the mileage is stored on our Acura's?
I've heard of people who lease similar cars to ours (Nissian Z) swapping out their instrument cluster where the mileage is stored from a wrecked car and placing into their car, to roll back miles on the lease. I understand that is illegal, but damn can it be done that easily? I bet the dudes at Acura are smarter than that..

What do you mean by "check the mileage with a key"? Does any one know exactly how or where our TL's store the mileage information?

Sigwill, changing your cluster won't do shit, and commenting about this on a public forum is not bright either.
good luck.

it's me, Alan Rickman.
I had a 99 Corolla CE, but I wanted a tachometer, so I bought an LE cluster pack off eBay and swapped it - my mileage did NOT change [that's a good thing], that info is stored in the cars ECU, not the gauge itself. Also, don't bother looking for a cable connected to the wheels because that's not how the mileage is gathered.
I hope this is really just a stupid question and you're not trying to defraud Acura NA for you exceeding the mileage stated in your lease. I can guarantee that if the vehicle has ever been serviced at Acura the mileage has been noted, also more and more car shops [like jiffy lube, etc.] are reporting to car fax, and any title changes are reported to carfax along with the mileage.
Seriously... stupid.

I wouldn't say it's a stupid question. We (Acuraziners) tend to discuss everything about our cars in this forum. No one had really discussed this so I was just wondering how it worked in our cars. Sounds like nobody really knows how the inner workings of our car's "brain" work when it comes to true mileage info. BTW, I don't lease my car, I own it. I'm just that guy who likes to know how stuff works.

If I recall correctly, the mileage data is stored in a flash device in the cluster itself. I don't think you can just plug a new cluster in to the car though - all the data buses in the TL make me think they probably require a programmign of the cluster to put a new one in. Actually, I seem to remember a programming procedure for a new cluster to get it to work properly.
Theoretically, if you wanted to roll mileage back the best would be to get access to the flash device where the mileage is stored and wire it up in a way that the car thinks its writing to the flash device, but it really is not (i.e. flash device is not in write mode, etc.).
Lots of possibilities, but at the end of the day most people who are capable of doing this have better things to do, and economically are better served spending their times on those other things than by saving some money by displaying a lower mileage on their car (whether for resale purposes or warranty extension).
