When are new navigation discs released?
Hey,
Does anyone know when they typically release the new navigation discs for sale? Was the 2017 disc actually released in 2017, or did it come out (much?) earlier? I'm thinking about updating the disc in my 08 TL (still running the original disc), and noticed the 2017 disc is on sale for $99. Is that because they're getting ready to release the 2018 disc? I'd hate to drop $100 on a new disc and then have them come out with the 2018 disc a couple weeks later.
Thanks,
Pat

I believe they usually come out in early fall.

Cool... thanks! I'm in no hurry for an update (I usually know where I'm going), so maybe I'll keep an eye out for a more recent used disc, or just grab 2018 when it comes out.

Do people still really utilize the NAV system enough to justify the upgrade charge? I don't have NAV on mine, but my wife's car does and I refuse to pay the update fee to GMC. This is a serious questions...just curious since so far I haven't found the justification for factory NAV anymore. During my car shopping, I can't make up my mind if I will put NAV on the requirements list or not....other than it may be included in an up-level trim package on various vehicles and I won't have a choice.

Really... I don't know. I guess the car is new to me, so I'm still sorta in the "get everything fixed up" stage, and an updated navigation disc seems like a reasonable thing to get.
In the past, I've always used a portable GPS unit, or just printed directions on paper... I don't use GPS on my phone (don't want data). Having the large navigation screen in the dash seems really convenient, rather than having to take out a portable unit, suction cup it to the window, etc.
Plus, it's 10 years old... I definitely wouldn't buy an update every year, but a one-time update seems like a reasonable cost (I think I got a pretty good deal on the car, so I don't feel bad about spending a few bucks to get it fixed up exactly how I want it).

just dont expect much....as it's a complete ripoff for $100 or whatever the outgoing rate for the disc is...
there are NO updated graphics, just updated POI....as in new gas station across the street.
waste of money
you would be better off using the disc that the car came with.
and still print your directions because this car gets simple directions WRONG! sometimes it will direct me to a Burger King in two cities over. that's 400 miles away!
you have to remember, the system was designed and operational in 2003...

I didn't expect any new graphics or anything... but I was hoping there'd at least be updated roads. I live in the DC area, and lots of roads have changed in the last 10 years. Is that not the case?
I don't really care about POIs, since I don't plan to take it on a lot of long trips... mostly just commuting to/from work, and occasionally driving someplace somewhat local for a concert, to buy something on Craigslist, meet up with friends, etc. That's usually when I need help from GPS.
Thanks,
Pat

Pat, you've been getting by JUST fine without this 100 dollar disc.
it's a waste of money.
the TL's navigation just sucks ALL AROUND.
you're better off just printing your directions like you have been. (I still do it for road trips, I still have KEY MAPS!!!)
and again, for a simple burger king across the street...the stupid navigation will route me 400 miles across 2 cities...

i think a better use for the nav, is instead of using it as a GPS....use it as a way to look at side streets incase you do get lost.
like if i accidentally go through some neighborhood, i can kinda scroll and zoom to figure out how to get back on track.
but the routing feature def. sucks and will take you someplace completely different

Okay... thanks for the heads up. I'll throw it on my back burner, and if I come across a really good deal on a newer disc, or feel the need to throw away $100, I'll revisit it. Most likely, it'll fade into "meh" as I get settled into the car.

I think it's worth the money
I rarely use mine, but I hate when the car is floating in outer space on the screen. I've had lots of roads change here too, and if they change here, they're likely changing wherever I road trip to also. For $99, it's peace of mind.

I dont think you can get a 2018 navigation disk for 04-08 TL's. I think 2014 is the last update (which I have).

Cool... thanks for the heads up. I ended up picking up a cheap used 2015 disc, and I'm happy with it. As mentioned above, it DEFINITELY wouldn't be worth $150, but I think it was worth upgrading my original disc.

Unless they've updated the routing algorithms, which I doubt, an updated disk is usually a waste of money! If you have the original disk that came with the car however, it might be worth it as roads and points of interests can change that much in 9 years.

But yeah, I updated my disc by 8 years for $40, and living in the DC area, there have been quite a few road changes around here in that time... so I feel it was worth the upgrade.

Supposedly they recently added an Electronic Toll Collection setting, which lets you maximize or minimize ETC... so it seems that they're doing slightly more than just POI and road changes. I'm not sure when they added that, and I haven't dug through my settings to see what, if anything, changed in my 2015 version.
