What should I do with my navi?
Hey guys,
My TL is a dedicated track car and I don't really have any use for my navi system but I don't want to pull the whole system and waste it. Being I don't know much about the options or capabilities of the nav system I wanted to get your guys opinions on what I could do with the unit to make it worth while to keep in a race car.
Thanks

There's definitely a market for it. There are plenty of non-navi TL owner's that would like to convert and it's been done many times. In fact, there is a forum member who does this on the side (maybe full time, not sure). Do a search, there are a couple of dedicated threads on non-navi to navi conversions.
You could advertise it for sale in the Black Market. Maybe someone who wants it bad enough will pull it themselves and pay you big $$$.

Well I guess I'm not ready/willing to go through all that. Basically the nav/electronic side of the house is really not my strong suit so I'm just looking to see what mods are out there that would be beneficial for a race car. Ideas that I've just briefly had were a full time back up camera or just displaying some of the HMI manager stuff. But what would be really great but I'm not sure it's possible would be to display info on the screen from an iphone or whatever like one of the car apps out there. Is there anything out there to make that doable?
Thanks

I dont own an iphone/ipod so I dont necessarily know all the options for them.
but basically, you buy a piece of hardware to wire up to your nav.
search around for the isimple, nav2go, and pie x3. you need at least these three pieces to get your ipod on the screen.
Check out jptl04's audio build. he has his iphone/ipod on his screen.

I dunno if this is just me but, if you were to get a dedicated track car, why would you buy a FWD TL and then rip all the luxuries out of it? You woulda been much better off buying something lighter to start and possibly RWD.

Don't forget about the brackets, wires, antennas, buttons, etc. Having spent some serious time trying to get a car under 10, I could easily see this thing being 60 or 70 pounds all-in.
Of course, there are all kinds of track cars... I guess that we should have asked what kind of a track car this is.

This has been discussed over and over and over and fucking over again. I've road raced my TL numerous times and it's a great car on the track, and it's different. Everyone and they blind uncle tracks an M3 or evo etc. So let's just not go there.
Also, I didn't say anything about the weight of the "sound" system. I've already got all of that out but that has nothing to do with the functionality of the nav system. I was just looking for options before I considered pulling the whole nav system out. Using the screen to display a laptimer or a g meter or gauges or anything of the sort would be worth it to me to keep it. but if it's not feasible then just forget it.

You said the the whole thing in your first post... so that is what I was going off of since the stereo and navigation are really very integrated. I didn't think that the navi would work without the stereo.
Personally, I would have nothing in the car, but if you want a screen, then the advice above will get you one with the stockie. I would think, though, that you could get a lightweight LCD that looks better, performs better and is easier to integrate with some hdmi or something with a custom fabricated bracket... and you could put it closer to your viewing area than where the stock navi screen is.

I could see using only the screen for possible info readouts. I'm sure there's a way to display the info that the ECU sees but does not display like coolant temp, AF, oil pressure, etc. Or you can hook it to something like a g-force and use it as a display.

Yeah thats exactly what I'm talking about. Now if we could just figure out how to do it!
