We're back: Stock Subwoofer Upgrade Feeler

This is a long shot, but let's see who's interested.

It would be a 8" drop in sub. Factory sub woofer replacement that would directly drop in and utilize all stock equipment, wiring, and amplifier.

No after market amp required! - efficient enough to perform full duty with the available ~100 watts of the stock amplifier.

No larger gauge wiring required! - runs on factory wires. Simply plug out the old sub, plug in the new.

Complete drop in. It would be a straight replacement, so you don't need to modify, or cut your rear shelf.

Custom built just for our application by a very reputable audiophile company. They focus most of their applications on a balance of of SQ and SPL, but much more biased towards sound quality and fidelity. So you won't only gain low end extension, but also improve the quality of your low-end.

Better sound quality, accuracy, and more bass.

Just seeing the interest, if there are any who want some more thump, but don't want to go with the extreme of a full sub woofer enclosure, amplifier, and etc. Just simple a bit more bass, the way it should have came stock.

If you are definitely interested in something like this, and would highly consider it if it came out, say "I'm interested". Feedback welcome.

Bad News Friday. 04.11.08.

Manufacturer I originally wanted to work with decided that this project is not worth it for them to pursue with the increase in metal prices and even if I were to absorb the costs they didn't want to help me out. This is after keeping me on a leash of promises that everything will work out soon and asking me for more money. 4 months of patiently waiting has not paid of.

I do apologize to those who patiently waited. I've already contacted a few other potential manufacturers already but don't want to keep this thread up until I have a solid working prototype again. Thank you for sticking with me.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call or e-mail me.

Thank you.

This thread will be re opened once the project continues

Good news Wednesday 08/13/08

Alright guys. It's been a long while, but it may look like we finally have a light at the end of the tunnel.

Few things have changed since.

It will be a little more than I expected, but that's because you are getting more than just a sub. It will be a bolt on flush mounted enclosure that will bolt on to the bottom of the rear deck, in the trunk. This still maintains the factory look, and 95% of your trunk space. Not to mention, access to your spare, or DVD access panel.

The enclosure built will house an 8" woofer, both designed and specifically built for us by CDT for this very application.

There will be no need for an aftermarket amp, headunit, or wiring. Just one positive and one negative wire is all that is needed.

It will retain all your factory headunit features and functions.

I'm going down today for more R&D work, so hold on. I just wanted to update you guys, to those who are still interested.

I have it in my car at the moment and let's just say this. Rich Bass.

I have been looking at the JL 8W3V2 (dual 4 ohm).. But it cost more, not a drop in, and not designed for free air like the TL wants.

I would be interested if there were more details "very reputable audiophile company" (not to dog you) sounds like the guy trying to sell me speakers out of the back of his truck...

But I will be watching this thread.

now how would this react with the ANC feature on 07+... when you install aftermarket, you have to disable it.. i think its because of the extra power...

Cool

I don't think you will be happy with ANY free air sub. Here is a link to what I did. It was very easy. Sound like a million.......https://acurazine.com/forums/ramblings-12/triathlon-145417/

Interested in cleaner, tighter bass with a drop in at under $100, you bet, but it's not my 1st priority.

I'm interested in what you come up with.

I'm particularly interested in how this woofer will compare to stock... Selling it as an upgrade to stock form may give little to no increase in performance.

Getting better bass response is almost always a function of woofer size and power applied. Upgrading the woofer material without applying more power isn't going to change much in response IMO.

Making a nice free air woofer that can take some power, and drops in would be nice though...

Sorry guys I'm still waiting for a response from the manufacturer, and their suggestions to our application.

It isn't a "back of the truck $2000 home audio company in a white van", lol, their a pretty known and I just want to make sure with them before I release any information...sometimes they prefer not to be known.

I should have some news by next week. Long t-giving weekend for business'.

Good news. After a phone call from the manufacturer, he suggested that I send in the amp and the subwoofer so that he can perform some tests to make sure that the new woofer will exceed the current one by using the factory amp. This way we can make sure that there is a benefit! Anywhere, here are some pics of the uninstall!

Removed rear shelf, and C-pillar covers. It's extremely easy once you get the rear seats out. All you need to do is pop, pop, and pop. Their all pop outs besides the SRS plug, which you need to use a flat head as it's a bit snug in there.

Looks like there is some sound deadening there, but I guess not enough.

Removal of the sub was extremely easy! 4 bolts undone either with a 8mm socket, or a phillips head, and a plug for the wires.

And this is our factory amp. What a beast!

I'll get an update by the end of the week when the sub arrives.

I'm interested too. I mean, mine is 2005 model and I'm running my third sub from the factory. They make terrible noise and when they are done, the sound they make is like "brrrr-brrrr-brrrr" . You know what I mean.

Sure, you just need to pay some import fee's but shouldn't be much for a small item.
