Verizon Wireless Cutomers.. Bluetooth News
I spoke to a Verizon rep at my job when they came in to sign people up under our corp. discount plan. She said they should have a Bluetooth compatible phone out in the next two months. I assume it is this one

updated The FCC yesterday approved the Motorola V710, a new tri-mode CDMA phone with integrated Bluetooth for Verizon Wireless. The clamshell-style model sports dual color displays and a camera with flash. A small memory card slot, video messaging, BREW, and "advanced" voice dialing round out the feature set. The FCC documents include photos of the phone with a Verizon logo. The first North American CDMA Bluetooth phone was the Sony Ericsson T608, which has seen only limited production and distribution following Sony Ericsson's exit from the CDMA market. A Motorola spokesperson declined to comment.

Am I the only one that wants better sound quality for cell phones and screw the extra bells and whistles; e.g. camera built in?
I'm glad that Verizon is finally getting a bluetooth phone and I'll probably begrudginly purchase it, but how about a bluetooth phone without a camera- what a waste!

I couldn't agree with you more. Just give me a good phone w/ bluetooth & good battery life. Put the R&D into making the phone call a better experience (easy to use, clear calls) rather than camera/video, etc.

According to the Motorola site, the V710 should be out "in the first half of 2004." I plan on buying it as soon as it comes out, but I hate myself for it, since I know I'll be paying out the nose for all the useless crap I'll never use.
A colleague of mine switched to a different provider a few months ago just to use the bluetooth in his '04 TL, but I'm sticking with Verizon and just waiting for the V710.

Cell phone tech
Keep in mind cell phone tech is driven largely by gadget freaks, hence the cameras, etc.
Like the Finns and Japanese. They use cell phones to buy stuff out of vending machines:

Hey, isn't the 710 supposed to be out today?
*snicker*
It'll be out when it's out. I can wait.
And who needs a camera on their fricken phone anyway?

I happen to know that Verizon is currently testing the Handspring Treo 600. That phone doesn't have bluetooth but the up and coming Treo 610 does. I would assume Verizon will support that phone as well.

When I called the HFL support number listed above, they said they will have no way of knowing whether the phone is compatible with the car until they receive some sort of notification from Motorola/Verizon that it would be.
Are we back at square 1 again???

Can you say "WHAT THE F%$K!?!?!?!?!????"
WTF??
Bluetooth is supposed to be a "standard", not subject to manufacture "versions". It is suppsed to have universal compatability with other Bluetooth devices, not hit-or-miss.
