T-mobile is terrible.

I love the HFL, but T-mobile is killing me.

Apparently, T-mobile had some cell towers down Monday evening - Tuesday, so those in the NYC area--me included--were without cell service for around 12 hours.

Service resumes and today I visit one of the many Starbucks in NYC with a T-mobile "Hot Spot" that permits T-mobile customers to connect to the Internet via a Wi-Fi card, and I send multiple email messages that no one ever gets. I know the messages were sent, and I know others using the same server reported no problems sending and receiving, so I gotta figure it's related to the blackout.

Then I drive from NYC to upstate NY using one of the heaviest traveled interstates in the northeast, the NY Thruway, and I lose 3 separate calls, a recurring problem.

Thanks T-mobile!

No problems with T-Mobile here. The only place I ever lost signal was BFE Kentucky. (I am writing this from BFE Georgia.) I wouldn't be too hasty to blame problems caused by the blackout on your wireless provider, but it seems like your phone should find a roaming partner if only T-Mobile's network went down.

Well, I just picked up a T-Mobile SE610 tonight to possibly replace my Verizon phone. I can say that my T-Mobile reception at my house is better than what I got with Verizon. I may finally be switching providers after all these years ...

However, the received sound on the SE610 was more prone to static and distortion when listening in HFL through the car speakers. Anyone else seen this?

Regarding T-Mo's prices, my plan is going to be going up around $5 more a month (and whatever the taxes are) for similar service that I've had from Verizon for about 5 years. Verizon's plan: 1000 Anytime Minutes + 3000 Weekend & Night minutes for $50 + $5 for Nationwide Long Distance.

check the t610 firmware, apparently newer firmwares fix many of the "static" problems. i have yet to upgrade, i'm still on R1C or something like that (too lazy to check).

The problems that T-mobile experienced on monday here in the new york area was a result of Verizon having problems. It wasn't even T-mobile's fault.

But I must agree that T-mobile service has been degrading recently.

Gotta tell ya......even though we who use Verizon are STILL waiting for the Motorola v710 to come out.....the service is quite good. It's rare for me to have a call dropped or messages lost. I just hope they're not fibbing about the release date of 5/21 for the v710! I'm ready for some HFL in my TL!

Last month I went with T-Mobile cause they did have the best price as far as service and also got my new phone Sony-E for $20 after $180 rebate.

Service is "okay". But then a lot of services in my area aren't the greatest. Recently was at a friends in East Brunswick - connection was horrible! Friend said all cells were bad there - better off using house phone. Weird thing is that if I turn phone on in my house - can't connect to network - have to go outside.

I would of preferred going with Verizon, but didn't have bluetooth phone yet and I needed a new phone right away. Also, from info I've looked up, the verizon phone - Motorola is gonna be big bucks which I don't wanna pay. I don't use my cell phone much. It's more for emergencies, etc.

True, T-Mobile ain't great in NYC metro area, there are other two service providers much better than it...

But, while discussing this issue area by area, T-Mobile is not too bad...

I recently switched from ATT digital to GSM and got the SE 610 phone. At first I didn't like the phone or the service, but last week I was in Atlanta, and the phone worked like a corded phone. I guess the area and quality of the cell towers makes all the difference. In Pennsylvania where I live, all the cell towers suck. My service is terrible, the calls drop or cut out, and I get echo's and just plain terrible reception regardless of where I am. In Atlanta, everywhere I went in the city and 'burbs the cell phone reception was great. Go Atlanta!!

I don't know about the whole Philly areas, but my T-Mobile with T610 seemed to work OK in the downtown last month.

I'm actually looking for a new phone, and am considering T-Mobile simply because I can't get any AT&T reception at my house (everywhere else is fine.) But the phones on their site just don't excite me. The Nokia 6800 or the SE look kinda cool, but AT&T has a geekier selection it seems. I guess I'd have to look at them, but its gotta support hands free or why bother?! Maybe their site doesn't show all the phones... The V600 looks really cool, but thats AT&T, and they can't seem to figure out how to give my area GSM service. Not even with the Cingular tower sharing now. blah.

T-Mobile

Douglas Colt posts:

I wouldn't touch T-Mobile with a 10 foot pole. I had it for over a year in the San Francisco Bay area and the service did not work 1) in my house (which is smack dab in the middle of silicon valley- a very urbanized area) and 2) in my office building which is about 3 blocks from the freeway with a giant window. Unbelievable. The best was when I called customer support to cancel and the genius on the other end told me that "according to her coverage map" I shouldn't have any problems and would I like to wait and see if the service improves? Mind blowing.

Switched to Verizon and it's much better, but I'm still waiting for them to release a good bluetooth phone.

T-Mobile on the East Coast, namely NY, NJ, PA have limited coverage. I have been with T-Mobile for almost 4 years and have had no problems and even on road trips. On another note, a cell or cellular tower anotates a analog tower while GSM is purely digital. That's why it still confuses me why people call their mobiles cell phones. must be old terminology that stuck through. oh well.

Doesn't "Cell" mean "the equipment of transmission, reception and antenna"?

My understanding of “cellular” is the mobile phone system utilizes several base stations to segregate a service area into multiple “cells”. Cellular calls are transferred from base stations to base station as user travel from cell to cell.

So, if digital systems (TDMA IS-136/CDMA IS-95/GSM) still use the simliar ways or have those stations to transfer their signals or codes, we should be able to call it "cellular". This is what I think...

I remember I've read something like this from the textbook before...

I will have to do more research on this. The cell is what is used to describe the TDMA transmission, not necessarily digital transmission. Interesting thing is that the IS-95 protocol is a standard across TDMA/CDMA/GSM. I will be back with a more solid answer.

T-mobile Fraud

I WENT TO UPGRADE MY TMOBILE PHONE (NOKIA 6600) FOR THE MOTOROLA V600. AFTER 4 HOURS ON THE PHONE ABOUT THE UPGRADE, THEY AGREED TO SELL IT ME FOR 269.99 PLUS 15.00 FOR FED EX, IF I DID A NEW PHONE CONTRACT. I DID WHAT WAS REQUESTED AND THEN FOUND OUT T-MOBILE HAD NO RECORD FOR THE NEW PHONE ONLY THE NEW CONTACT. I WENT TO THE TMOBILE STORE TO BUY THE PHONE AND THEY SAID I COULD NOT GET AN UPGRADE AND THE PHONE IS 379.99.
IN THE MEANTIME I WENT TO CANCELL MY CONTACT AND WAS TOLD THERE WOULD BE A 200.00 CHARGE.ALSO THE T-MOBILE REP TOLD ME THEY DON"T USE FED EX FOR SHIPPING. THIS COMPANY IS ALL ABOUT LIES.
OVER THE 3 YEARS I HAVE BEEN WITH T-MOBILE ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS NEW NEW NEW CUSTOMERS AND IF YOU ARE EXSISTING YOU ARE SCREWED. BEWARE

I only went with t-mobile cause of them having a bluetooth phone. Yes - me too - hoping when my yr contract is up - verizon's BT will be out.

I was just down in NC in the mountains in August. Out of the 4 of us who had cell phones - all different phone Co's and different cell phones - the only one that worked ALL the time was my husbands - Motorola phone with Verizon service.

Vikrampatel,

Where did you get the unlimited anytime minutes for 99.99. When I check the ATTWS site I see 1800 minutes on a local and 1700 minutes on a national plan.

that was one of ATT's "Charter" offers when they first introduced GSM network af ew years ago... people who signed up with it...got locked in the plan and are suppsoedly grandfathered.... so i found somebody who was willing to "change financial responsibility" of their account into my name...(basically give me their phone number and att sends me bills and everything)... and i paid the guy a good amount of money to get him to give me the plan..but it works out for me because i love the service so far.... and unlim minutes for 99 is great...plus i get a 15% discount because i work at the local school district...so its really 85 a month...
