I agree the place back there is very limited and hence this is what I did....
I picked up a flat USB cable from a gas station and ran it under the switches...
also I was not able to get any audio cable to work in that little space, I did know the older iphone headphones came with a tiny headphone jack....so since I had a cable here is what I did:
Here is the height comparison between a iphone headphone jack (middle) and radioshack L adapter (right) and an adapter cable (left)

the new cable
PS: the cable was soldered and heat tube wrapped and covered in insulation tape...

I didn't want to remove anything from inside of the tablet itself, I've had the back panel off before though all of the antennas are attached to the inside of the back panel. I actually have mine pulled from the car right now and on my counter since I was working on it and updated to the last USB-ROM version that Timur put out.
I saw the two little screws holding the connectors, didn't want to damage any of those delicate ribbon cables at all or the back of the nexus 7.
I don't use an audio cable at all, I'm using a digital audio converter so I only use the USB connection for everything so nothing in the 3.5mm port anymore.
I didn't want to cut the bezel like the others to route it out the side, my cable is too fat with the 20AWG wires in it, I think it'll be better off using the break-out board anyhow so the connections are good and I have no concerns about them. The 20AWG is simply too big, but I'll take a look at routing my ribbon cable out of the tablet when I install it, thanks that'll actually help me out with fitment.

From what I understand, it connects to the little gold(ish) ports on the side of the tablet, and it gives you a USB port, and 3.5mm output.
I figure the connector should be really easy to remove from the dock, and just wire it up manually.

Don't know how much the dock costs, since we'd need that connector off of it and then the behavior of the tablet itself may be different since its going to have a sense that its docked.
It'd take some testing with the setup with the tablet out to make sure it'd work so you don't go through the hassle of installing everything to only find issues afterwards, but that might just work.
I'm planning on just doing what you did with yours and using the micro-usb breakout board for my cable I've already got it built and ordered some of them.
I ordered 3 of the breakout boards, since I have enough of the cable left-over to probably make another 3 cables if I can find suitable connectors for the other ends that will accept the 20AWG wires reliably.

Good stuff. I ended up buying a tablet that I liked too much to hard wire so I just bought a good stand for it. Sits in the same place and doesn't restrict any of the buttons. That being said has anyone tried using any apps to monitor vehicle performance?
This has been covered in another thread before but check out Torque in the android store. I bought a BT OBD2 dongle and have been running the app while driving. Given me a lot of insight into small things I didn't know.

WOW great install man!!! I have a few questions
How does the tablet function on hot days?? if its an issue have you thought of installing a cooling fan or heat sink of some kind?? and how long has it been since the install after all the bugs were worked out?? I dont own a TL yet but I believe the car has steering wheel volume controls do you still have that stock functions? Once again great Job Man!!

Yet, I've never had any issue with the tablet getting too hot.
It's been in there since this thread came to be. So, it's getting close to a year now.
I wouldn't say all the kinks have been ironed out. I've just lazily learned to live with them.
The tablet still loses battery faster than it charges when the screen is illuminated.
The tablet still freaks out and reboots when I turn on the headlights. Yet, if the headlights were already on when the car was started, all is fine. So, i just always leave my lights on.
And there's still a hint of a ground loop somewhere. But, it's only noticeable when the volume is up really high, and the music/video stops or hits a quiet point.
Yes, steering wheel volume control works with the tablet. But, not the seek buttons.

Thanks to everyone, mostly Turbocoop, 00g, NitroViper, and mzilvar! Wasn't sure whether to post in this thread or make a new one, but given the post length, I made a new thread. Please direct questions for me over there.

00g how did you wire up the buttons from the tablet to work?
i think i may have a solution to your problem if you havent fixed the headlight/tablet issue yet... i was having a similar problem with mine.

What's your fix for the headlight issue?
Side note: Once I find a newer tablet that has a ROM available that's similar to Timur's USB ROM, I'm probably gonna upgrade the tablet. I recently got really annoyed with the insufficient charging speeds.

I really dont know why you guys are going through soooo much difficulty and making something simple very hard...
My tablet is rooted and to turn the power on, I just use the USB cable connected to the car charger...so the tablet turns on (if its OFF) when it detects power...
This is how my setup is:
-Turn the car on
-Screen lights up (has a SLEEP counter set after 10 seconds)
-In 10 seconds, I unlock the tablet (once I unlock the screen will stay on at 10% brightness)
-I hit START DRIVING (using tasker). This sets the brightness to 40%, turns on WIFI connects to my phone (tether), turns on Bluetooth and connects to OBDII device, sets volume to 2 (out of 10), sets screen timeout to infinite
-I manually start my music and Torque
-Once I get to my destination, I manually stop my music and exit torque
-I hit STOP DRIVING (using tasker). This turns OFF WIFI and Bluetooth, sets screen brightness to 0%, media volume to 0, screen time out to 10 seconds AND locks the screen/tablet
If I have to need to reboot, I use QUICK BOOT...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ions.quickboot
for volume control, I use widgets...this is the one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id.persistfree
for brightness control, I use this widget:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...s.sliderwidget
So you dont really need to wire all the buttons IMO

I wired my buttons out for peace of mind. I didn't want some software issue or anything make me have to pull the dash completely apart. I know it is not necessary but I feel a lot more comfortable having it. Here is my setup on the buttons.

Just in case this is preventing others from trying this install, I have some thoughts that may simplify things. I also didn't want to pull apart the dash every time, but due to a few random reasons I needed to install the tablet without wiring the buttons. During the install, I positioned the tablet so that buttons faced towards the A/C vents. Now, if swoosh's methods don't work (which hasn't been an issue), I can just easily dislodge the A/C vents and reach down without removing the stereo, etc.

If I were to do this job again, I'd still re-route them. In my opinion, the volume buttons are for the most part unnecessary. But, I'd still do them.
As for using tasker for all those other settings...I don't see the point (with the ROM I'm using.) When the car is off, and the tablet is no longer being charged, it pauses the media and goes to a low power "sleep". When the car is back on, and the tablet gets power, it comes back to life, and resumes playback of whatever media I was listening to/watching.

^^^ it was more for turning WIFI and bluetooth off to conserve battery while its not charging (when car is off)....
again, not about hard of tough, its about making a simple solution and not something which 85% of the people wont try to attempt and it is very tough for someone who wants the mod and does not know anything about soldering....

The questions I have on this project are:
I know the 04-06 TL has a different dash layout. I assume this is 04-06 based on the gauge cluster. Will this work on a 07-08 Dash? I have a non nav model so I will have to get the Nav cluster. But it should be easy to swap, but in regards to the tablet, might be a little different.
In terms of expandable memory, adding information to the tablet, did you extend a USB or a connection cord of some kind to the Nexus for access in the dash?
When it comes down to overall install, In terms of parts, time, labor, and accessories, what would you say the parameters are? 6 hours? $400?
If you were to do this again, what things would you do differently?

Here is what I used to extend the USB. Drilled a hole in the armrest cubby hole and mounted it.

I wouldnt change a thing...the reason being, my solution was simple....i was deleting factory radio and screens for the tablet....
sounds goes from tablet 3.5mm headphone jack to a Y split cable (R and L) to a processor which connects to factory wiring to factory amp to factory speakers....
I tether wifi through my phone so I have a fully functional tablet with maps and spotify and torque/etc
the tough part of the project:
1> splitting the non navi center screen into 2 parts...this was by far the biggest issue i faced....solution: buy it used from someone OR just relocate the whole display....half of it wont work but well....OR if you are not going to delete the radio then I would keep the screen as is...

Hi !!
I've had some hiccups.
Most notably, the tablet acting as if I were tapping the vol down button. But, only when everything was installed, and the car was running.
I'm still not certain what was causing that. But, to fix it, I desoldered the factory momentary switch buttons that are behind the nav controls, and I installed my own, and wired them completely independent of the vehicle. Long story short, it works, and it was a bitch, and I wanted to kill someone many times today.
So, here it is all installed and up and running.
http://youtu.be/ZO2yf8MDS6E
After shooting this, I had more issues. But, I think I just resolved them. We'll see in the morning when I put it back in. I'm currently trying to download all of Florida in the Google Maps offline support.

If I was to buy the items and be willing to pay to have this mod completed would anyone be interested? Or I can just send the money for them to purchase the parts and complete the mod. Just name your price and let's get it done. Thanks in advance.
