Cool Successfull CD-Audio --> DVD-A all with free tools

I just got my TL and the DVD-A disks I burned in anticipation all work great.

True they are NOT multichannel but are full CD-Audio quality. Packed full, I get around 90 to 99 songs (6 to 8 CDs) on a single disk. Alternately convert your mp3/wma/asf, etc. to wav and use them with this tool. Not as compact but still gets you lots of songs on one disk

Sorry if this is old news to some.

I followed the directions at http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net/ exactly. It does take some time to compile all the material and produce the ISO files but the results are pretty cool and absolutely free. Note - It is all command line stuff, no GUI shell tools for it yet. Use at your own risk. The tool doesn't do more than one group but that's OK with me for now. I burned the resulting ISO file with Nero 5.5.x to TDK DVD-R 4x media using a Pioneer A05 drive.

Others have tried this without success so I am guessing the burn tool or more likely the media used (even if DVD-R) is more to blame. Not all DVD-R is the same and some players are very picky. Perhaps the ELS system drive is such.

Be prepared to invest some time to get familiar. I'll answer questions as best I can and within reason. If you don't know what command prompts, GUI, shells or scripts are then this might be beyond you. I mean no offense by this, really.

I'm one of those that tried this and failed, so I'm going to give it another go with the media you tried.

i believe you can place tracks in different groups. you can set up the groups as different albums or different genre

the voice command stops at 29. You can say 60, it wil play 16. if you say 61, it plays 21...

when i want to go to track 78 i start at track 1 and press down 1 track, it takes me to the last track, like 99, and i keep going down

YUP.
Even w/o voice recognition this is a good point. I realize that just because I can get all those songs on a disk maybe it isn't practical all in one group. Trying to get to song 90 isn't that easy. (unless there is some quick skip I'm unaware of)

I re-read the archives at http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net/ and found it does support multiple groups (up to 9). I'll try it out an see how it goes. Having to manually switch groups using the scan/rpt buttons in the car may also be a pain.

Re authored my content using a group for each CD on the DVD. Successfully worked with 8 groups (up to 9 can be done). A bit more work on the authoring side since groups need to be spicified individually in the command line call to the program. Disk plays fine in the car and can change groups using scan/rpt button combo

In the end I think I prefer just one group with LOTS of tracks.
- Switching groups is a pain and has delay until the head unit responds to key presses
- The player moves to the next disk after the last track of a group, not to the next group. So to listen to the whole disk you need to swich groups BEFORE the last song ends or the player runs off to the next disc

I can see a definite advantage for groups for things like the same songs but different format. Like group1 is 5.1 and group2 is stereo or a different mix. But for big compilations of songs I think I'll stick to one big@ss group.

Does anyone know how to rip audio from a normal DVD (a live concert for example), and burn it to a DVD-A disc retaining the Digital 5.1 sound or DTS sound?

You would need a program like Sonic DVD-Audio or discWelder I think ... to get it to copy each channel.

Use DVD Decrypter to extract the 5.1 VOB's.
Use Besweet to convert the .VOB to a 5.1 wav file or make 5 unique mono wav files.
Insert the wav or wav files into WavLab or similar utility.
Burn onto DVD-R media and play in TL.

I have made about 6 DVD-A from concerts and other 5.1 music DVD's... SOUNDS GREAT!!!

i normally go to the track list option on the navi and press down on the arrows to scroll (not the joystick). it scrolls 5 tracks at once and does it pretty quick. i get to track 150 in 5-10 seconds or less.
