Talking Sprint/Nextel I870

Hey guys I just picked up the new Nextel phone I870 which has Bluetooth. Just wanted to let you guys know that I linked it up with HFL in the TL and it works great. Great phone also.

Congrats. Had mine for like two weeks now. Battery indicator doesn't work, signal strength doesn't work, everything else is fine.

Only thing I haven't figured out, is how to use the WALKIE TALKIE with the TL. Is it even possible?

I also got an i870 earlier this week. I have to hand it to Nextel. Even though they took WAY too long to get Nextel flip phone with Bluetooth, they got it absolutely right with the i870.

Camera, bluetooth, MP3 player, a very nice sized display for wireless web use, decent battery life (at least compared to the crappy i836 it replaced). Excellent phone all the way around.

I can overlook the fairly minor problems with a missing battery/signal strength indicator.

Well done Nextel!!!

You know that's the one feature I didn't even test.

Although, Nextel is our company's wireles carrier, I rarely use the Direct Connect feature. Totally off topic rant, but I never quite understood how using a walkie-talkie could be sold as a business feature. Usint the walkie-talkie always seemed like more trouble than is better than just making a simple phone call. If I'm in public, I don't feel the need to share both sides of the conversation. If I'm by myself, I keep wondering why I need a walkie talkie instead of a phone. Plus half the jacka$$es in my company feel compelled to litter conversations with "CB" talk, e.g. ending every statement with 10-4 or asking for someone's "20." Plus having to fool around with the push to talk button takes the "Hands-Free" out of the whole HFL experience.

My guess would be it won't work with the TL. I'd be surprised if the "Call" button was programmed to emulate the same function as the PTT button on the Nextel system.

Hey dude I work for Sprint/Nextel and totally understand your point of view but you know that you can put your walkie talkie feature on private. That way no one can hear your conversation. Let me tell nothing beats that feature when it comes down lets say keeping in contact with your sales staff or drivers out in the field. Its connects in less than tenth of a second. Its also nationwide and international soon to be in Europe. Let me tell it saves company time which in turn saves them money.

I love DC. I use it at work all the time. It's fast, and quick.

Hey "Pele 96", will there be a firmware upgrade on the i870 so the Acura will display the signal strength and battery condition??

PS - I think the i870 was well worth the bucks, and almost worth the wait!

Cost savings. Doesnt go against your minute usage.

Good points. I guess because my company pools our minutes, so it's not a cost issue - I never really worried about PTT.

I'll admit PTT was a lot more intriguing when you were able to use it beyond your local calling area.....

I would be surprised if a firmware update comes out to support the signal and battery indicators. The only phone I know of that was "upgraded" to work with the TL was the Treo 650.

I also purchase the i870 two weeks ago. I have not figured out the direct connect feature while in my TL. Otherwise the phone has worked flawlessly. It took way too long for Nextel to have a good bluetooth enabled phone, but it was worth the wait.

I figured out how to use the direct connect on the phone. You have to physically pcik up the unit and press the direct connect button to talk. After that it works through the HFL system.

Hey guys I'm up in Canada and the sales guy told me it will take Telus 6months to a year to get this model up here. I know that telus and nextel just use each other’s towers for the phones so I'm wondering if I can just get one from the US and just switch the cards. We do it with all the other phones in the company if one breaks then we just pull the card and throw it in another phone.

I know that if you use a Nextel phone from the us that is on the Nextel Network and take it up to Canada it will work off of the Telus system. Don't know though if you switch the cards if it will work.

How do you link the TL with the 870? I am having problems linking the two, and tech support guy said the 870 was not an approved phone with the TL. Help?

I read the manual for the i870 (on the cd that came with it) and the manual for the TL. I linked mine in about 4 minutes.

Unhappy |UnDone.

I too opted for the i870 when dropping Cingular for Nextel.

Honestly, (and I'm a former Motorolan and continued fan), the SonyEricsson T616 I replaced was much easier.

Does anyone else using Direct Connect get teh ear splitting |Done coming through the speakers too?

What can I do to get rid of that in HFL mode? (I realize it's the phone and not HFL's "problem").

Thanks
Robb

And thanks for the hint about pressing the PTT button to answer. So much for hands free. Oh well.
