When running a power wire from the battery to an aftermarket amp, does one need to drill through the firewall and install and grommet?

On which side of the car should the power wire be ran? And how does one go about removing the trim pieces along the door bottoms?

Just bought a set of tools like this at harbor freight. It was so cheap that I couldn't resist. If you don't want to dish out the cash, use a butter knife wrapped with a cloth.
