You didn't look hard enough if you couldn't find the answer.
YES..you can swap the stock sub with another 8" sub and it will sound better. But it won't do much. If you're already looking for more bass, chances are you'll upgrade VERY shortly. Just buy an amp and a 10/12 in a sealed box and call it a day. It'll give you much more
Why are you worried about using the stock location? Space? Money?

Why not something like this then? https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/new-custom-sub-enclosure-pics-824695/
Save space and will blow a free-air 8" away. An 8" in the factory location, without deadener will sound crappy, rattle, and wont get much louder or lower at all. Search "unclad4 sub box" or something of that nature and you'll find another good "factory looking" sub box that you might like

You'll need to tap into the sub wires either before or after the factory amp...I suggest before as it's less shit the signal has to go through. If you want a quick job though, you can just unplug the factory sub from inside the trunk (fit your hand up inside there near the sub) and wire into there. This way you don't have to run the wires down the side of the car and to the amp in the passenger side kick panel. You'll need to cut one end of RCA's off and wire those into the sub wires with the other end (RCA plugs) obviously going into your amp.
You don't want the factory sub on
Send a PM (private message) to the guy in the thread I gave you AND/OR Unclad4 to see if they can make you a box and ship it, etc. If you're not comfortable installing..just pay someone as it shouldn't be much to wire it up really quick. Maybe 30 minutes worth of time if you wire into the sub signal in the trunk.

Yeah you can keep it in there no problem. It's hooked up by a "plug" and all you have to do it unplug the wires. Takes 2 seconds to unplug it and wire into it. And if you ever need it again...just take the wires out of the plug used for the LOC and aftermarket sub/amp and plug it back into the sub! Simple as that

Search for Line Out Converter. You may or may not need/want to use one.
FYI: There is a sub box that fits in the corner for sale in the Black Market. I was just browsing in there and have no relation to the seller.

Connecting high level wires to low level inputs means you might let out the magic blue smoke. Amps don't work well without the full amount of blue smoke still inside.

Check you amp manual. Look for instructions for wiring without line level input. (direct from speaker outs)
