Radar Detector/ Escort 8500 High or Low?

I'm wondering, do you guys place your radar detector high or low upon the front windshield? Cause i'm wondering now if i were to place it up high at around my 06 TL rearview mirror will the tint be a problem. Cause i heard somewhere that the tint might actually affect the reading of the signals.

tks

In my personal opinion I think higher is better for radar, but if you place it completely behind the tint band you will decrease the laser effectiveness. Laser detection if pretty much a non-winning approach anyways, since for the most part of the detector goes off you're pretty much shot dead at that point anyways.

I like to keep my detector high on the windshield next to the mirror just under the tint band. Hard-wire is pretty much a must as well.

It will be pretty useless for laser. The spot coverage of the laser beam on the front of the car is about the diameter of a softball or soccer ball. And that's down at the license plate, since this is where the cops are trained to aim the beam.

As to radar, higher is better

i'd say mount it high just under the tint band. If a cop hit you with laser you're toast anyway.

Mine is level with my rear view mirror, just to the right of it.

Can't use my visor, but thats what sunglasses are for.

I believe the passport 8500 is compatible with the ZR3 Laser Shifter. This should provide you with some protection from laser.

Mine is located mid-mount next to the left A-Pillar. I got it hardwired @ Circuit City and the guy wasnt all that familiar with TLs so I just told him putting it off to the left (less work than mounting it in the middle of the windshield by the mirror) was fine. I actually like it better that way, and it doesnt obstruct my view. Doesn't effect detection, either.

sounds like the consensus so far is "high is better"

I also agree that higher is better, but I can't do that here in VA because it is more visible.

Q: Can I mount my detector on my sun visor?
A: We generally do not recommend mounting your detector on the sun visor because the dark tint at the top of most windshields significantly reduces laser detection range.

As a rule of thumb, a lower detector mounting position is better for laser and a higher position is better for radar. But, in most vehicles, the difference in height between the top and bottom of the windshield is not enough to make any perceptible difference in radar reception. It's best to mount your detector where it has a clear field of view front and rear, and where you can see it without obstructing your own view of the road.

I have my escort hardwired up top right above the rear view mirror and it seems to pick up everything perfect including laser and I have my front windshield tinted.

So is a combination of hardwired Escort Passport 8500 + ZR3 Laser Shifter an optimal combination?
