I dont think this radar is worth the money. I know people that have it, and they say the battery life is horrible...

I have the Solo S2 and the battery life is fine, one set replaced since October last year (note I don't use it every day). I have the power cord but have not used it as I don't like wires hanging everywhere. No wires, no fuss and its great. Fits perfectly along the tint line on the driver's side and the visor still works. Also easily moved from car to car. Love it.

If your getting it for 170 that I would say its probably worth it... I havent heard anything negative about it except the battery life. And using the cord just beats the purpose of it being cordless! But 170 I would probably go for it! Otherwise I hear that theEscort Passport 8500 is excellent too!

check it out..... http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleID=1064

My vote goes to the new Escort Passport 8500 X50 (which I own) or the V1.
I used to own a Escort Solo (the first generation that took 4 batteries) and the performance was lackluster IMHO. Corded units generally perform better.

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear, one set of batteries (2 "AA") replaced since October. The detector has been fine. I don't have pics but I use the suction cups and line it so the antenna is just below the tint line.

I have a Passport 8500 X50 and did a cross country trip. I was literally saved 5 times! It has the BEST long range ability of any radar detector and it really works. The V1 is great too because of the arrows but I didn't think $100 better.

I have BEL V995. Beltronics is the best IMO. I bought it cuz of its great reviews and it has lived up to it ever since. Ive used BEL and the valentine 1. The BEL absolutely blows the Valentine away as far as filtering out false alarms. The Valentine goes crazy every 5 seconds. drove me nuts! I dont know about the Passport 8500, i have yet to try it out.

cheapest to highest..which are worth the buck

--the Escort Passport 8500 ($300), BEL 980 ($290 street price) and the Valentine One ($399)

Escort Cordless Solo S2 Radar/Laser Detector $330

are all of the above cordless?

Get the 8500 X50

I was just painted twice with LASER coming into work this morning (6/29/2004 at 8:03am and 8:07am), and the X50 performed flawlessly. The LASER alert has never gone off before, so I always wondered how it would perform. Well, after this morning, I can tell you that the X50 has earned my trust.

The Solo S2, for some reason, canNOT see LASER threats, which was why I got rid of it.

Also, the X50 is very quiet. Much quieter than the Solo S2.

I've had the ValentineOne for about 3 years and this thing has saved my ass about 100 times (not kidding or exaggerating - FL state troopers are everywhere on 75). The V1 is only radar that I know of that count’s the number of radar beams (bogies) detected and also tells you which direction they are coming from.
The only thing I would change with the V1 is the bulky design and you should have the ability to disable K band since this causes most of the false alarms. Do cops even use K band anymore?

What about detectors that can be installed into the dash? I'm thinking about putting one in the service tray area between the radio and cigarette lighter, but not sure which model to go with.

Any suggestions? Can the Valentine, Bel or Passport be installed this way? My thinking is no, but would appreciate some advice.

It always is the least favourite yet I think its most convenient. It depends how much wiring you want to do, if you are taking it to other cars, how much you speed etc. I don't speed very much but I like to know where they are. For me it hasn't missed finding anything but each to his own. No wiring is my priority.

I'm not sure if this is what your looking for but you should check out valentineone's site. I know they have an alternate display adapter that you can mount anywhere.

You guys do know that BEL and Passport/Escort are both made by the same company? Performance is about the same so buy based on price and features.

Can you buy the 8500 in retail stores? I looked on Best Buy web site - but didn't see anything. Circuit City only lists BEL & Whistler.

Yes, I believe Best Buy carries them, but you may want to call before making a trip to the store. The best deals seem to be at Ebay however (Even though I love my X50, I regret paying full price for mine through Escort's website).

I'm with AGD. I have the BEL 980 also, had it about 5 years.. it has saved my arse sooooo many times. I used to get tickets every 2 years. I've not had one since I bought good ole "Tweety" as I call it.

I ended up turning off the X band and it is not in use by cars anymore and was going off at every CVS, Gas Station, and Publix.

But the K and Ka pickup is killer.

It does do laser, but of course yer pretty much dead at that point.

And I love the voice announce, ya don't have to look at it to find out which band it is. K I've often found is city cops, and Ka is state patrol, so when it announces it, it helps to know what to look for.

mine was $395 I think, but lord it's worth it.

The funny thing is the manufacturer, Bel-tronics, is located in Mississauga just outside of Toronto, Canada. Radar detectors aren't even legal for sale in Ontario..

I have the Passport 8500. I have had it for 2 1/2 years and have been very pleased. I bought the ESP extended warranty on this unit and they are going to upgrade it to the new Passport 8500X50 for me at no cost; cool. Cincinnati Microwave/Escort Inc. said that as soon as they have their upgrade procedure in place, September sometime, that I can send the unit in and when I get it back "Voila" it will be a new Passport 8500X50. The ESP plan was $29.95 so I guess it just paid for itself.

This is my second Passport, I had the original Passport before the 8500, both were excellent. Also, the customer service at Cincinnati Microwave/Escort, inc.has always been top notch.

I am torn between the solo s2 or the new 8500 x50...wires are important but it is not used every day in which the wires would be a problem, i just want to make sure i get the better detector for the money i am spending...they are both so close in price...any suggestions on which one to pick from...and i have to pick from the above because i have gift cards for sharper image and those are the only ones they sell
