Hi Guys,

OK - I need some advice. I had an appointment today to get a DICE unit installed on my 06 TL with NAV and XM. I was going to keep the XM with the understanding that the major limitation with DICE was that you could not have text display if you kept the XM.

Well, the installer just called me to say that they recently went to the electronics show (CES?) and found out that a company called PIE (Pacific Interface Electronics?) is coming out with a new IPOD adapter in ~10 days (he is checking the release date to be sure). According to him, it will do everything that the DICE unit does, with one major bonus: You can keep XM and have text display for the IPOD!!! The price is apparently about $60 more than the DICE.

Isn't this what we've all been waiting for?!?!? Or is this guy smokin' something? Any and all help would be appreciated if anyone has experience with this, or knows something he doesn't. Or am I going to have to be the guinea pig?

Thanks in advance!
Rob

Does the PIE also double as an HD reciever like the DICE does? I didnt see anything on the PIE (Precision Interface Electronics) to say otherwise.

I don't have a clue about the HD receiver - I'm supposed to get a call-back from the installer no later than Tuesday with more info after he does more research. I'm a pessimist by nature, so I'm not getting too excited yet :-) If this works (or if it doesn't) I'll report back on the details....

I actually know the installer who the OP was dealing with, but I guess he took the day off because he's not answering the phone. While I personally didn't see this at PIE's CES booth and I can't find any information or web articles on it I'll have to wait the same 10 days to see if it's true and not just vaporware. If it is true, DICE will have to adapt!

Why can't Dice or USA Spec come up with an interface unit that displays text and maintains the XM? I'm interested in seeing what the new PIE unit can do. I'll be waiting.

I think it has to do with the programming of the factory system itself. Since the FM/AM modes do not support RDS they cannont show text or atleast programmed to do so. But, the SAT mode does support text display which is why they say that you will have to use either or.

PIE To Introduce The FRD04-POD/S
01/20/2007

CES 2007, Las Vegas, NV - Precision Interface Electronics, Inc. introduced the FRD04-POD/S – iPod interface for satellite ready Ford Can-Bus radios.

This extremely sophisticated interface is exactly what the masses are waiting for. Full text capabilities and control features – through the OEM radio or iPod itself. The FRD04-POD/S will also charge the iPods internal battery and retain the digital sound quality. There is no other iPod solution that will offer that much versatility in just one package.

Testing is currently under way and the initial shipment is scheduled for delivery to the industry the first quarter of 2007.

This is Rob C but I had to change my account registration for reasons too annoying to get into right now....

So after starting this thread, I have to report my final conclusion on the PIE unit...the answer is:

Yes, it is too good to be true :-( Don't buy PIE!

I had the PIE unit installed and it was horrendous. Many, many issues and no text. Then we come to find out (after looking in the manual) that it is not compatible for my car (2006 TL with NAV/XM). When the installer called PIE they apologized and said they gave us the wrong info.

So I finally got my DICE installed and so far so good (no text though since I'm keeping XM). I'm a bit pissed at PIE since this sidetracked me for quite a bit, but I guess everyone's allowed a mistake once in a while.

So my apologies to DICE on this....don't get PIE, get DICE! Sucks being the guinea pig.

Thanks,
Rob
